Why Donate?
- The HRFA was arguably the first and most successful group to find polluters of the Hudson River and hold them accountable. We continue our mission to "Fight for the Hudson" to this very day.
- The HRFA is a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization. You need another charitable tax deduction don't you?
- All of our members are volunteers. No member of the Elected Board of Directors earns an income for all their hard work. Every penny donated goes to support our programs.
- Our Youth Angler Program continues to get kids "Hooked on fishing, not on drugs." Help support us so that we can give America's veterans opportunities to go fishing too.
- Let us continue to offer scholarships for worthy college-bound high schoolers.
- Support the restoration of the world's first Riverkeeper vessel so it may take its rightful place in history. Perhaps, in a museum on the Hudson River; the river it protected for decades before its decommissioning.
- Help us realize our dream of having our own museum and meeting place in the Palisades Interstate Park. A beautiful historic place, one that can be shared with the public to enjoy as well.
- Shall we continue?

The Hudson River Fishermen’s Association is a group of recreational fishermen who make active use of the N.Y. We assist where possible in efforts to abate pollution and promote sportfishing and the management of that recreation. We are a IRS recognized nonprofit 501c3 organization . Greetings Gates,
EST ARRIVÉ !
I'm not talking about "Le Beaujolais nouveau" either. March 1st marks the opening day for targeting stripers in the bays and rivers of New Jersey. Try your luck with fellow HRFA members on Saturday March 4th on the pier at the Chart House. FREE for members. Donations accepted. Details below.
New York has two season openers for striped bass. It's April 1 for the Hudson River north of the George Washington Bridge (slot size 18"-28") and April 15 for marine waters (slot size 28"-35") defined as south of the George Washington Bridge.
BTW, did you know that the demarcation line for the Hackensack River is the Cedar Lane bridge in Teaneck? The Cedar Lane bridge is just south of FDU. Even though it is still a tidal river at that point, fishing the river north of that bridge requires a valid NJ freshwater fishing license. Don't get a summons from state rangers. They're checking.
Friendly advice: Make sure you always know & follow local fishing regulations. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
BTW, we just got approval from the town of Piermont, NY to have a special one-day fishing event on the pier. This will be a FREE event for members held on Saturday April 15th to kick-off our annual Fred Rung Memorial Striped Bass Derby. Keep scrolling to find details about the event, the Derby and registration for same
YOUTH ANGLER PROGRAM
Nowadays, what many people most readily recognize and associate with the HRFA is our Youth Angler Program (YAP). It certainly seems to motivate a lot of people to make a charitable donation to our club during outdoors shows. Communities and organizations reach out to us to provide fishing opportunities for special needs children, America's veterans and everyday people. These events, especially our annual Hooked on the Hudson, are a big part of fulfilling our mission to educate the public about the river so that they can appreciate how important and vital it is to "Fight for the Hudson!"
Providing these opportunities takes a reliable core of volunteers who enjoy helping others. Wayne Geider would like nothing better than to run the YAP forever. He truly loves it that much. Reality is, none of us can do all the things we love forever. Regardless, this is not a one person job. It takes true teamwork. If you have some time please reach out to Wayne and see how you can participate. You won't be sorry. It is very rewarding work and makes you feel great knowing that you contributed to making a better day for someone else who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience the fun of fishing.
For it is in giving that we receive.
- Saint Francis of Assisi
YOUR DUES AT WORK
We hope that during the course of the coming years that you will see improvements and more FREE events and giveaways. Rest assured annual dues will not be applied to our three special projects requiring mega dollars to become reality. We will raise the money needed for them separately. And that money will remain in separate bank accounts. No doubt many of you may wish to donate to one or more of those projects in addition to your general membership.
Just a reminder, if you haven't paid your dues for 2023 yet please do so ASAP. Click HERE to renew or become a new member today using PayPal. Make Membership Chair Arnie Ulrich's job a little bit easier.
SPEAKING OF ARNIE
At our Annual Awards Dinner on April 23rd, Membership Chair Arnie Ulrich will receive the HRFA's first ever Robert H. Boyle Lifetime Achievement Award. If you want to find out who will be honored with the club's most prestigious Pete Barrett Achievement Award and our Friend of the Hudson River Award you'll just have to attend the dinner. Please come out to congratulate all the winners! You can buy your tickets from Dan Harrison, Pete Musse, Arnie Ulrich or Scott Havner. Or, wait for on-line registration using PayPal which will open soon.
THE FRED RUNG MEMORIAL STRIPED BASS DERBY
Last month I spent a lot of time talking about me, myself and I. More importantly, also about my relationship with the Hudson River and the HRFA. One of the things I mentioned was a pamphlet of fishing the Hudson put together by Pete Barrett, who started the NJ Chapter, which directed me over to Croton Point to try my luck there.
Anyway, if you register for the Derby, we will email you the pamphlet in its entirety. Along with a 3 hand drawn maps of places along the river to try your luck. Although they are dated, I am sure there is much that is still true today. I am curious to know if anyone who knows the river well enough would like to update it. If so, we will print it and share it with HRFA members only. Or, possibly bring copies to outdoors shows to give as a gift for persons making a charitable donation to the club. Just an idea. Any takers? Let me know.

SURVEY SAYS
This is a test and only a test to see how many people will take a moment to answer 5 simple multiple choice questions. There are no wrong answers.
If you want to participate please click on the blue box (the illegible dark letters say "Take My Survey"). It was created using SurveyMonkey. Take the survey and we will treat you to a couple of hot dogs at the March General Meeting! How's that for motivation?

HRFA Monthly Membership Meeting Proposal
|
|
|
The results of the survey will be shared with everyone. (Not the entire world. Just members and Friends of the HRFA that get our email blasts.) It should be interesting. Maybe even funny.
|
|
|
|
We need a people to:
- Join the HRFA and/or renew their membership at the start of each year.
- Recruit new members
- Just show up at meetings and events to show your support. Attendance will be its own reward.
- Fill the open Secretary position on the Board. All you have to dod is attend once-a-month Board meetings and take notes. Type them up and present them at the next month’s meeting. Easy-peasy. A great way to learn all that the club is doing
- Become a sponsor or ask for donations for our events
- Sell advertising space for the newsletter
- Accept an apprenticeship for our Youth Angler Program. Wayne Geider is ready, willing and able to train a newbie.
- Do Public Relations to let local newspapers know what we are doing, announce scholarship winners, upcoming events, etc.
- Many more opportunities to help. Just look around and pitch-in when you see an unmet need.
Best regards,
Joseph Albanese

Chart House Fishing Trip
March 4, 2023
7am – 11am
|
|
A FREE EVENT FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE HRFA
Let’s kick off NJ's striper season together at the Chart House in Weehawken NJ.
|
|
The Chart House is an excellent location to wet a line, and every year this area produces outstanding-sized striped bass.
Kids love fishing! So bring them along too. The HRFA will have some extra rods and reels, bait and terminal tackle to help newbies get started.
The law in NJ requires anglers to use non-offset circle hooks when fishing with bait for striped bass. This is mostly the time and place on the Hudson River to fish with blood worms. So, if you can bring your own - great! Also, we will have a pier net. Gaffing a striper in NJ is illegal.
Prizes
Adults: There will be a mystery prize for the largest striper landed in length.
Kids: There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for kids.
The HRFA will also have hot dogs and soft drinks at 11:30 when the winners are announced.
The Chart House
1700 Harbor Blvd,
Weehawken, NJ 07086.
Ample parking is available.
While everyone is invited to participate, we kindly ask non-members to donate $20 to help defray expenses. Not a member yet? There will be someone there to sign you up. Why not just click HERE to renew your membership or become a new member today.
If you have any questions about gear and or bait, please get in touch with Michael Sardinas. He can be reached at VicePresident@TheHRFA.org or 201-232-5988

America's Ice Fishing Tournament
February 4, 2023
as reported by the Editor
Pre-pandemic a few HRFA Members traveled up to Minnesota on two occasions to fish in the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza; the largest ice fishing contest in North America. Once Covid hit, travel restrictions significantly impacted participation in a negative way.
The first year, on only his second day ice fishing, Joe Albanese caught a 1.9 lb. tullibee that landed him in 52nd Place, winning a $400 Rapala gift card. (Caught on tackle and bait loaned by Scott Havner BTW.) Beginner's luck! For the full story see the April 2019 issue of River Views.
|
|
Two years ago, thanks to Covid, the Brainerd Jaycees expanded their fund raising efforts by creating a second annual tournament using an App called FishDonkey. (The same App Alex Spindelman introduced to us.) This is a virtual version of their ice fishing tournament. Both raise money for their local charities. You can fish this one-day virtual derby on any lake in the country. It pays out up to $20,000 in cash and prizes.
Two years ago a smaller group of HRFA compadres fished together in the first virtual version on a frozen lake in upstate NY. Joe Albanese caught and entered a small yellow perch. Scott Havner caught bigger ones but did not enter them. Because his fish were not nearly as big as the ones showing on the leader board he thought he had no chance of winning. Well, needless to say, Joe won back his entry fee + $10 and Scott (who was not in it to win it) did not.
This year Scott Haver, Stephanie Hess, Linda Havner, Joe Albanese and Mona Mak entered the virtual derby and returned to the same lake in NY state. Now Scott, having learned from his mistake last year, entered a fish. So he, at least was on the board. So was his mom, Linda, and Joe. Stephanie caught a pickerel but that species was not allowable in this contest.
Pete Musse and Wayne Geider also fished there that day but were not entered into the tourney. Pete caught a 20" pickerel which he proved by texting us a photo of him holding it. (Without which why would we trust him? LOL) We congratulated Pete on his catch and he replied "Ty did you win anything Scottie!!!" (Ty - that's thank you)
Before Scott could answer Pete's text, Joe looked up and shared the standings with Pete & Scott. For the overall standing Scott was in 162 Place with 48 total points for an 8.5" sunfish and Joe Albanese was in 275 Place with only 36 total points for a 7.75" sunfish landed in the final hour. Linda's was an even smaller sunfish, somewhere further down in the standings. Joe's sunny was caught in the final 30 minutes on a tip-up using waxy worms that Scott gave him. Ironic, is it not?
You can follow the conversation from here (expletives deleted):
|
|
Joe with his winning bluegill!
|
|
At some point in time the Brainerd Jaycees must have added Joe Albanese's name to their list of charities.
|
|
The look on Scott's face when he saw that Joe won again. He keeps using that word, but I don't think he knows what it means.

Finish in 275th Place and win a $250 gift card. Inconceivable!

We did not show "Love at First Sight" (12:00 minutes) staring Sir John Hurt in an Oscar winning short film about true love. After all, we are a fishing club. :) They can be viewed here by clicking on the images below.

Fishing in Paradise
By Carl Bruger
300,000 people are citizens of a tiny 21 by 14 mile paradise called Barbados including Super Bowl halftime performer Rihanna. This scribe believes that he was at least fishing in Nirvana as I casted between giant pod filled flamboyant trees and amidst a complete pallet of full-flowering hibiscus plants. It was in a small tidal salt water creek located between two Sandals resorts where all the action exploded.
|
|
I had caught fish here three years before Covid put everything on hiatus so I showed up rigged and ready with a light tackle telescopic spinning rod and reel. Knowing that dough-balls were the “special” food of choice for the resident population of large tilapia, it was easy to procure bread from the cook at the nearest surfside restaurant. He also gave me a bucket to hold my catch as you can see in the accompanying photos.
The feeding frenzy was immediate! No sooner had the bread, squeezed tightly onto a 1/0 Gamagatsu Octopus hook, sunk to the bottom, a foot long glutton latched on and gave my six pound test mono a good yank and stretch. After a couple of spirited runs I lifted the catch over the bank and deposited the first of a dozen tilapia into the five gallon bucket.
|
|
In less than an hour my luck had resulted in several pounds of potential fillets that the cook, Rufus, would gladly take home to his family. To make him happier yet, the rod & reel that I used were part of my gift to him for letting me fish on the Sandals property. The other picture shows him and a buddy with one tilapia still on the line.
The next day, while we were waiting for the airport ride that would take us home, I ran into a Texan named Jason who was a bass expert recently in the news for landing a huge 17 pound bucket mouth ranked 8th all-time in the Lone Star annals! He was equipped with a quality light tackle spinning rig and was pitch casting a three inch soft plastic silver paddle tail that was quickly engulfed by a magnificent tarpon maybe four feet in length! Of course the trophy snapped his thin six pound test line on the first water clearing leap, but the excitement would never be forgotten just like the multiple subsequent hook-ups that Jason enticed during the time I observed.
To steal a famous quote from General Douglas MacArthur, I shall return!

Fouling Up Fishing Friendships
By Carl Bruger
|
|
 |
As promised this article is the follow-up to last month’s River Views column on what makes a best fishing buddy. While there are numerous traits and behaviors that are positive actions on the water there is obviously a direct opposite listing that we all know exists as elements we don’t seek to find in our best buddies on the water.
Here in brief is a dirty dozen plus one ways to lose your fishing friends fast!
1) Be late or drop out at the last minute of a big trip. (Illness, deaths in the family is of course understood unless your Aunt Bea has died for the fourth time in six years!)
2) When you get to the hot spot, hog the center of the pool, grab the corner rail each trip, or even wedge into the aisle seat on the plane. In essence what is meant here--- share the best of what you are doing equally.
3) Waiting to shower until you get home next week. It is one thing to stink of fish because the catching was great and the chum flew everywhere, but if hot showers are available or even a cool lake beckons, a little bit of soap will keep fellow anglers/campers very appreciative. My Mom always said, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”.
4) Being a Sir Snag-a lot, or Teddy Tangles, will piss off both friends and strangers faster than a saboteur at the test area of a slinky factory. Needless Gordian knots that waste time and screw with angling minutes raises the ire of any angler.
5) From beginner to expert not putting into practice all the skills you have mastered for any specific angling method. If you don’t want to give 100% of your effort and skills to catch fish, friends who are giving their all will lose respect for an indifferent or lazy fisherman/woman.
6) Don’t be a Scrooge! Be willing to share snacks, beers, sun-tan lotion, hot lures or flies, etc. True friends will reciprocate with those who are generous. Split those tolls, gas bills etc.
|
|
 |
 |
7) Be super stubborn and irately inflexible. Demanding that a drift boat risk capsizing over stop-gap shore choices when gales guarantee danger, or refusing to take cover in a thunder storm to fish with a “graphite lightning rod” puts the whole group at risk.
8) Lies and brags like George Santos. Every angler alive gets a Mulligan for a few tall tales, but sharing many sacks of bull fecal matter will cost fibbers friends.
9) Fishing drunk or drugged. It’s tough enough to fish and catch with all your faculties under control, but folks who think a fishing trip is the escape time to get bombed are ruining it for others.
10) Showing up with nothing or way too much. Planning ahead with the group to know what will be needed and showing up with just that will make for a successful expedition. My own greatest fault was showing up with ten rods, five tackle boxes, plus the kitchen sink, for a simple day trip. A NO-NO.
11) Mooching without asking. We already covered sharing but taking gear, food or drink without asking is lame etiquette.
12) Sleep the whole trip each way. That’s fine on a plane ride, but a jaunt of hundreds of miles by car should have driver time split in agreed upon time segments.
13) Ignore or hog photo ops. Sometimes the most cherished part of a great trip is the mutual sharing of videos, photos and souvenirs gathered over the course of the adventure. Try to include the whole group in shots for posterity.
Many readers will glean useful advice from this article and with spring approaching we should all be eager to wet a line in the brine or freshwater too. Hang with your best buddies and try to make some new fishing friends along the way.

What is HRFA Free Money? Are you a paid member.?
At every HRFA in person meeting, half of the HRFA portion of the 50/50 money goes into a virtual jar. At the end of the meeting, a paid HRFA members name is picked (from a jar of all paid HRFA members) to receive the money. The name is announced three times. If the HRFA paid member is not present, the money goes back into the jar for the next months meeting. The process continues and is repeated at the next HRFA meeting.

HRFA Membership Information. If you dont have a 2022 or lifetime member card you are losing out on great HRFA member benifits.
Pay your dues. Get your 2023 membership card.
The generous grace period ended for renewals on March 31st. Those not renewed are on the stale list and are removed from the membership rolls. Note , If you do not have a 2023 or life time membership card , you are not a HRFA member.
For those people who join(ed) the HRFA in October (or later) of a given year, their new or renewal membership also is covered for the following new year. There is also a generous grace period (3 months) for those who are unable to update their membership in January, however paying your dues late puts a strain on the records maintenance and consequently the ability of the executive board’s planning of activities and events.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or want to help (time, skills, or financially) on any particular club projects or events, feel free to email me, Arnie Ulrich (kavester@aol.com) or call me at 1-201-304-4691.

Spectrum for Living Fishing Dock
If we build it they will come!
|
Dan Harrison proposed, and the Board approved, a $2,500 contribution to kick-start a special project to build a fishing dock in the Oradell Reservoir across the street from “Spectrum for Living” located in Closter, NJ. The long-term benefits will include support for outdoor activities, including fishing, for the residents and local community. To learn more about this wonderful organization click on their logo.
To offer your time and talents contact Dan Harrison at dharrison@cdtresources.com.
|
|
 |
Artist's rendition for promotional fund-raising purposes. Obviously, the actual dock will be built to meet existing codes.
|
|
 |
 |
Various sites for entry of machinery etc. needed to build the dock were examined by Board members and contractors back in November. The ray of sunshine hints that God must be smiling on this location and approves of the project to do good for others.
