NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

At CSArts-SGV, one of our core pillars is creating a welcoming culture. This means, in part, creating an inclusive campus environment for all members of our diverse school community. Any national celebration that brings focus to diverse cultures gives us the opportunity to listen, reflect, and take action in advocacy of inclusion and equity.

National Hispanic Heritage Month, which began yesterday, Thursday, September 15, and ends on Saturday, October 15, provides us one such opportunity. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we would like to highlight some of the incredible work of our student club Latinx/os/as United for Change and Activism (LUCHA). LUCHA will be sponsoring a number of activities this month including a sale of frozen Mexican treats during Lunch on Friday, September 30, morning announcements segments about Hispanic heritage and Latinx icons, and a Lotería at Lunch on Friday, October 14.

CSArts-SGV has a number of student clubs dedicated to social activism, a committee focused on furthering our work in equity, and a Student Culture Executive Board, which meets regularly with Administration to share feedback from various student affinity groups on campus. We hope all students have a chance to check out these various clubs today during Club Rush!

CLUB RUSH TODAY

Hey students, Club Rush is here! Be sure to come out to the 100s and 200s Quads at Lunch TODAY, Friday, September 16, to learn about all the amazing clubs you can join at CSArts-SGV. For those who are unaware, Club Rush is an exciting event where student club leaders showcase their clubs and attract interested students to join. We hope to see you there!

FALL FESTIVAL TOMORROW

We can’t wait to see you tomorrow, Saturday, September 17, from 5-7 p.m. in the CSArts-SGV Central Quad for our first Fall Festival, featuring carnival-style games, student performances, crafts, and more! Food and beverages will also be available for purchase from a variety of food trucks. All CSArts-SGV families, friends, and community members are welcome.

Please refer to our Campus Map for parking options. Overflow parking will also be available on the Northview Park field and surrounding streets. The weather will be warm this weekend, so please dress accordingly (hats, sunscreen, etc.). We hope to see you there!

SCHOOL ACCREDITATION

We would like to provide a quick note regarding CSArts-SGV’s upcoming accreditation process.

The Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC) is a world-renowned accrediting association. ACS WASC extends its services to over 5,200 public, independent, church-related, and proprietary pre-K through 12 and adult schools, works with 20 associations in joint accreditation processes, and collaborates with other organizations such as the California Department of Education (CDE). CDE has collaborated with ACS WASC in order to align the accreditation process with the planning process for California public schools. ACS WASC also collaborates with the University of California regarding the a-g course requirements.

CSArts-SGV had its first visit and initial ACS WASC accreditation during its inaugural year, 2017-2018, and were again visited in 2019 to add its first graduating class of seniors. CSArts-SGV will have its third visit from the ACS WASC in March 2023 to update and extend the accreditation. Teachers, administration, and staff have worked hard over the last five years in preparation for this next visit and students and parents have been a part of focus group discussions. This fall, additional focus group meetings and town hall discussions will be conducted as we finalize our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). Students will also start to hear more about our ACS WASC visit in their classrooms and on morning announcements as we inform and prepare them.

Please click here to review our school’s Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, which are the backbone of the ACS WASC visit and define our goals for students. These are also linked on Parent/StudentSquare.

Thank you in advance for your support throughout this process.

SINGLE BLOCK ABSENCES

If a student believes they were incorrectly marked absent for a single block, they should visit the corresponding teacher to clear up the misunderstanding. The teacher will then email attendance and clear the absence on the student’s behalf.

To clear an absence, please email attendance@sgv.csarts.net directly, instead of replying to the automatic notice. Emailing attendance@sgv.csarts.net is preferred so that the Attendance Office can keep all attendance emails in one location.

LOST AND FOUND

Please remind your student to regularly check the Lost and Found at the front desk for any items they may be missing. Keep in mind that storage space is scarce, so items that are left at the Lost and Found for longer than two weeks are donated to local nonprofits.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAM ORDERING

Students wishing to take one or more AP exams this year should pay for the exam(s) through the MySchoolBucks account that they set up during Online Registration. The exam fee established by College Board for each test is $97. If your family qualifies for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FRLP), the fee is $64 per test. Students are encouraged to register and pay only for those exams they are committed to taking. When ordering exams, we highly encourage both student and parent to be present to ensure that the correct exams are ordered. Please print and save your emailed receipt of payment for your records, as students may need it for future reference or refunds.

The deadline to purchase AP exams is Tuesday, November 1 at 11:59 p.m.

METRO SAFETY AND METRO YOUTH COUNCIL

Last week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department and Metro Transit Authority came together with CSArts-SGV Administration to offer safety information and tips to student riders and their parents. If you were unable to attend, please click here to review the Metro Safety Presentation, which also includes important phone numbers that all students and parents should have saved on their phones. Students can also pick up a Five Tips for a Safe Ride handout at the front desk.

Additionally, Metro is looking for high school students to serve on their Youth Council. The goal of the Metro Youth Council is to develop the capacity of young people to share their ideas and perspectives about Metro’s projects and initiatives. Applications are open for all interested 14-17 year olds who live in Los Angeles County. To learn more about the council, how to qualify, the benefits of serving, and more, please visit www.metro.net/youthcouncil.

SEEKING COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS

CSArts-SGV is grateful to have the continued support of the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation through the Gluck Community Service Arts Fellowship Program. Over the past four years, this funding has provided our students with the opportunity to bring free arts activities to those who have little-to-no access and to become more active and engaged members of the San Gabriel Valley community.

As we begin another year of this influential program, we need your help identifying community organizations that serve children, seniors, or other groups who could benefit from free arts enrichment programs brought to them by CSArts-SGV students and teachers. All referrals within the San Gabriel Valley are welcome and appreciated. Please send your recommendations and contacts to our Outreach Coordinator, Simon Harrison, at simon.harrison@sgv.csarts.net.

NOW HIRING

CSArts-SGV is currently hiring for a new part-time Office Assistant, responsible for supporting the Administrative Team in the areas of front desk reception, textbooks, attendance records, data reporting, and general clerical duties. Please pass this information along to anyone who you think may be a great fit for our awesome CSArts-SGV culture!

We are also still looking for Student Supervision Assistants to help us in providing meaningful perimeter, lunch area, and campus activity supervision. If you (or someone you know) would be a good fit for this position, please review the job description and email the requested materials to abbe.levine@sgv.csarts.net.

HEALTH & SAFETY REMINDERS

Please take the time to review our COVID-19 Information page for the most current COVID-19 policies and procedures. On this page, you can also access the COVID-19 Reporting Form in order to report a positive test, symptoms, or exposure.

Free COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available through Heluna Health to CSArts-SGV students and staff who have symptoms that correlate with active COVID-19 or who have had a known close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual. Tests will be administered in the Health Office by one of our school nurses, and results will be recorded in Primary Health, a secure online database. All students and staff should register for Primary Health using this link. Advanced notice of the need for COVID-19 testing is appreciated and can be requested by contacting the Health Office at 657.321.4000 ext. 60401 or health.office@sgv.csarts.net.
