Pride,

Happy Sunday!  I hope each of you had a wonderful weekend.  I was inspired over the weekend when I saw photos from quite a few of our families who were volunteering and giving back to our community. In addition to our families volunteering, this past week our high school athletes participated in the SC High School League's "Clean Living" Week.  Our athletes spent time cleaning our school grounds.  Acts of service, like the ones that our athletes did and those of the families I mentioned above, are important because all of us have the ability to contribute in a way that leaves our school/community in better better condition than the way we found it.

In addition to shouting out our families and athletes, I wanted to give a shout out to my team of administrators, teachers, office, and support staff.  I absolutely love my team.

Having people who relentlessly work the mission and have similar philosophies is so vital for organization success.  Then for a bonus, we really like each other and have fun.

I really am blessed to work with a such a "dream team."  While each of us are different and each have different personalities, every Riverwalk Academy staff member is extraordinary at what they do and are highly effective when they work together.

What makes working at Riverwalk Academy unique is that we do not work in "departmental silos."  Our dream team encourages collaboration and welcomes feedback.

The Riverwalk Roar (this newsletter) has evolved over the years and we now have a team who puts it together.  So on Sunday, when I sit and write my letter, I get the chance to see what others have written.  So it's funny to me that I knew I wanted to talk about Phil Jackson's quote about teamwork, just to find that unknowingly, Ms. Menges used the same quote in her newsletter article (below).

To close this week's newsletter out, I just want to say "thanks" to each of our staff members who I am fortunate enough to work with each day.

Pride, let's have a great week!

In Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

A Note from Ms. Carr

Greetings,

I have had a busy week. As I said before, I have been talking about self-control this month. I have been sharing Clark the Shark with the younger grades and My Mouth is a Volcano with fourth graders and a video explaining how self control affects our bodies and minds in 5th and 6th grades. It is so much fun to share the books and I try to be very animated so they remember it. I hope to find more engaging, fun things to do with the oldest students. They continue to be a challenge for me, but I am up for the challenge! If you would like any resources related to self control for the students at home, please let me know.

Along with my classroom lessons, I am starting a small group, and seeing students individually. I hope to start more small groups and you may receive an email regarding your student participating. Please let me know if you have any specific issues or concerns you would like me to talk with your student about.

I am pleased to say that this school year, I have an intern working alongside me. Her name is Susanne Teague and she is a student with the University of Denver. She has a long history in the field of education as a Math teacher, curriculum instructor/coordinator and coaching other teachers in teaching Math. She is working with our Middle/High school students and teachers as a Math Interventionist along with her internship with me. She has jumped in with both feet in both capacities and is a wonderful addition to our Pride.

Another busy part of my week was starting my coaching of my Girls on the Run team. The girls and I are going to have so much fun together. I just hope it cools off sooner than later.

Hugs,

Mrs. Carr

A Note from Dr. Dempsey

Hello PRIDE!!!

Thank you for a great week. Please continue to support your student and teachers by making sure that your student is completing work. If you need assistance with Powerschool, please reach out to your student's teachers for assistance. You should be receiving information regarding parent conferences to be held between October 7- October 14, 2022. This is a great way to know exactly what your student's strengths and needs are. Again, thank you for trusting us with your students and please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Christy Dempsey

A Note from Ms. Menges

Good Evening Everyone!

It was so much fun celebrating spirit week with all of your kiddos. It is encouraging to see school spirit throughout our student body to support our athletes. I hope that we always unite over the excellence of our school and strive to become the best versions of ourselves each and every day. When we work on being our best selves, we then come together to make a great group! Keep being awesome guys.

Things to Know:

  • 9th Graders, please make sure that you are attending class. When one begins taking high school credit courses, there are attendance requirements for passing the course. Therefore, students must not acquire more than 5 unexcused absences. In the case that a student receives more than this, they will have to attend attendance recovery outside of school to make up the time.

  • 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, please mark your calendars for make up picture day on October 21st!

Quote of the Week:

"The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team."

-Phil Jackson

Sincerely,

Mrs. Menges

RiverTech Students

(a catchy-name for our 10th-12th grade students)

A Note from Mr. Ball

Hello PRIDE,

We had a very good spirit week at our York Tech Campus, thank you to those students and teachers that helped make it a fun week. We are about two weeks away from the end of the grading period. Please make sure your student is keeping up with their studies. I encourage you to have your student review what they did in class on a daily basis. This will help them understand the material and may lead them to questions they didn’t realize they had. Also, attendance is very important when it comes to your students academic success. If a student has more than five absences they must make up seat time, this is a state requirement. We will send letters home regarding our make-up school when a student gets to the point of it being necessary. In the meantime, please monitor your child’s attendance and contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Please continue to encourage your students to take advantage of opportunities that are being made available to them on campus. In addition to our newsletter you can see what is being offered on the Padlet.

Dual Enrollment Students

York Tech students- you're entering your final week and a half of your first 8-week classes!! Congratulations! A few tips for the final week of the quarter:

  1. Pay attention to exam information for your courses. Sometimes your exams are at a different time than your class.
  2. Check your grades on D2L- Do you have any missing work that can be turned in? Is there review material you can use for your exam?
  3. Find a study buddy! Even if it isn't for the same class, make a plan for study time together.
  4. Don't forget about tutoring services at York Tech. They're FREE! Times might fill up during exam week, so make sure you reserve a spot quickly.
  5. Breathe. Don't forget these are college-level courses and you're going above and beyond in your education. You might not get the A that you're used to getting, but as long as you are giving each class your very best effort, you should be proud of yourself!

As always, I'm here for you if you need me. Just send me an email! I'm excited and proud of each of you for completing this first round of courses.
