The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness has released a summary of input received to its 2023 discussion paper, BC’s Modernized Emergency Management Legislation: Regulations for Local Authorities. Responses from local governments, emergency management organizations and First Nations revealed four overarching themes, including the need for provincial funding and support.

Canada Community-Building Fund

UBCM staff are hosting a webinar on July 23, 2024, 1:30 PST to discuss the recently renewed Canada Community-Building Fund. Local government staff involved in CCBF work are invited to attend. A presentation will be followed with a Q&A period regarding the new Community Works Fund program and agreement. Participants can join the webinar on Zoom. Please share the link with any relevant staff. The webinar will be recorded and posted to UBCM’s website upon completion.

Deadline for UBCM Executive nominations:

July 31

A reminder to all UBCM member elected officials: Wednesday July 31, 2024 at 4:00 pm (Pacific), is the deadline to respond to the Call for Nominations to serve on the 2024-2025 UBCM Executive.

The Call for Nominations provides information about the positions open for nomination, the procedures, Executive member responsibilities, as well as a nomination form. For those who miss the advance nominations process, there will be an opportunity to be nominated from the floor at specified times during the week of the 2024 Convention.

New Plastic Waste Regulations

On Monday, July 15, 2024, the Province enacted new plastic waste regulations. These regulations aim to limit the amount of plastic waste entering landfills and reduce the environmental impact of microplastics through additional prohibitions on single-use plastics.
