Most us try to do the right thing to keep up our health or improve it when we experience illness. Nutrition and exercise, hydration or good quality sleep, we generally try to do what is right for our bodies. This includes taking the medicines, supplements, powders, and injections, in recommended dosages to stay young and fit and even have shinier hair! But what happens when too much of too many health aids starts to have a detrimental effect on your health?
Turmeric (also known as curcuminâitâs active ingredient), is a popular supplement. It is a strong anti-inflammatory that thins and moves blood to help carry away excess nutrients and waste, major inflammatory agents. When we start using turmeric, it works well, we feel relief from pain caused by inflammation and we believe that we are now on a healing path. Great, so we add in more supplements to further eliminate inflammationâVitamin C and fish oil are strong antioxidants that move the liver and gallbladder to aid the intestines in eliminating waste. But then, suddenly, we find we have âmoved too muchâ.
In the clinic, I too often see patients with hip pain and loose bowels due to excessive intake of natural anti-inflammatory supplements. Many patients also exhibit bruising and broken skin on their legs and forearms. Their dosage has been too high for too long and their blood has been thinned to the point of breaking small blood vessels due to even the slightest traumaâyour pet jumping up on you results in arms covered in bruises. I recommend to these patients to ease off on the supplements and try 2 days on and 2 days off. Alternatively, you can limit yourself to one anti-inflammatory per day. When patients follow my advice, I see a quick improvement with the elimination of bruising and skin injuries and a much happier, healthier patient.
