Winterim & Spring Courses Now in Canvas

If you're teaching a Winterim 22-23 course or a Spring 22-23 course, it will be available now on your Canvas Dashboard in the "Unpublished" section at the bottom of the page.

If for some reason the course is not appearing for you, try clearing your cache. Sometimes Canvas will save an old version of your Dashboard which prevents new courses from populating as they should.

Also remember that courses come into Canvas 90 days prior to the start of the semester, so it's possible it may take a day or two for the integration to officially run.

Any live courses from Solar will be labeled "PKS Wntr 22-23" or "PKS Sprg 22-23" which will allow you to differentiate between those live courses (containing students) and sandboxes.

If you have any questions about accessing your Winterim or Spring courses, or would like content copied over from a previous semester, please contact innovations@uwp.edu

New Resources under Canvas Help Menu

Located under the Canvas "Help" menu on the black navigation bar. a few new resources are available for anyone needing additional Canvas support.

One resource, the UWS Training Events Calendar, provides a list of all trainings hosted by the UW System that relate to the digital learning environment. All trainings are free to register for and attend.

Additionally, there's a new resource called "Canvas Training Services Portal" that provides you with access to various training videos and mini-courses hosted through Canvas.

The Canvas Field Guide (pictured to the left) is one example of a quick course you can enroll in through the Training Services Portal.

Kaltura Captioning Now Automatic

Captions now appear on Kaltura videos automatically, even if you don't request the machine-generated captions in your My Media.

While the captions are added automatically, it's still recommended to go in and proofread the caption files, as most are only about 85% accurate.

You're also still able to submit Closed Captioning Request Forms for our third party captioning service, 3Play Media. These closed captions are advertised as 99% accurate and also include a PDF transcript with each video, although this does come with a fee for the university and isn't free like the machine-generated captions.

Typically, 3Play Media is recommended for long instructional videos. The auto-captions within Kaltura are perfect for anything under 10 minutes, they just require a little manual tweaking.

Reminder: Canvas Tier 1 Support Available

Remember that Canvas offers Tier 1 Technical Support for all faculty and students 24/7, 365 days a year. This is the primary point of contact for Canvas technical support and is the best way to ensure an immediate response.

You can access Tier 1 Support by logging in to Canvas and clicking on the Help button located at the bottom of the gray left hand navigation bar. You can search the Canvas Guides, chat online, or call.

Canvas Support Phone Numbers:

  • Faculty: 1 (833) 826-8712
  • Students: 1 (833) 820-4070

Students, faculty, and staff also have the option to self-enroll into resource courses in Canvas. These resource courses are full of video/written tutorials on pretty much everything in Canvas and most third party tools integrated in Canvas.
