March is Social Work Month!
Dear Caregivers,
Welcome to another edition of the Caregiver Courier.
It’s my honor to highlight Social Work Month – a time to celebrate the great profession of social work. This year’s theme is Empowering Social Workers!
Social Work Month, observed throughout March, uplifts social workers, and celebrates their contributions to society. Our Clark County Department of Family Services (DFS) employees and social workers from across the nation have entered the social work profession because they have a strong desire to help empower caregivers, individuals, families, and communities to overcome issues that prevent them from reaching their full potential.
Daily, DFS team members collaborate with caregivers and community partners utilizing psychology and sociology to solve social issues and improve people’s lives. Despite the challenges the social work profession can bring, our employees strive every day to push for change and advocate on the behalf of Clark County’s children and their families.
Additionally, this month marks an important time for social workers to inform the public, policymakers, and legislators about the fact that social workers have always broken barriers when it comes to the services they provide in an array of sectors. Those areas include hospitals and mental health centers, federal, state, and local government, schools, community centers, and social service agencies.
During Social Work Month, I urge you to educate yourselves about our amazing profession and thank the social workers in your life for all the great things they do!

Sincerely,
Jill Marano
Director

On the Child Haven campus, many sibling groups are waiting for a loving and caring foster home. We know that children do better when they are in homes, versus congregate care. These children have spent months on campus and desperately need your help.
It is traumatic for children to be split up from their siblings while in foster care, and we need foster parents who will help these kids stay together.

Important Educations Updates from DFS
March 2024
You and your child are almost halfway through the 2nd Semester.
Woo hoo! Congratulations on making it this far!
The 3rd Quarter ends this month. This is the time to check on your child’s grades and make a plan to ensure your child’s success.
Also see below for some great opportunities for youths!
Quarter Ends March 8- Check Your Child's Grades/Progress Report
- The 3rd Quarter ends March 8th. This is the halfway mark of the 2nd Semester.
- Quarters are a great time to check your child’s progress in classes and reach out to your child/your child’s teacher if your child is getting an F or low D in the class. We recommend you ask your child’s teacher what the most important assignments are to complete and what upcoming assignments your child should focus on to raise your child’s grade in the class.
- If a teacher will not work with you or your child on makeup work, please contact your child’s Foster Care Advocate/Social Worker to assist you as CCSD as a district is encouraging schools to work with children/families and accept late work.
- Please ensure you have access to your child’s grades in real time on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and/or Canvas Learning System.
- Families can create an observer account in the Parent Canvas Portal. Parents/Caregivers can personalize the notifications to best stay informed about their children’s educational progress. To sign up for an observer Canvas account please visit https://ccsd.net/employees/canvas/canvas-students.
- To sign up to get Infinite Campus Parent Portal and set up your account, contact your child’s school and ask for the Infinite Campus Designee to assist you.
Reminder: Please Provide Your Placement Notification Letter (Letter) to Your Child’s School When You Receive It and When Your Child is Placed in Your Home
- Knowing in real time where a child is living determines transportation options to/from school and expedites any transportation requests for your child
- DFS and CCSD are jointly responsible for providing transportation to your child’s school for your child if the school your child is staying in is not zoned for your home or if your child is staying at their current school which is not in your area. DFS makes the determination for your child as to whether staying at your child’s current school or having them move schools is in the best interest of your child knowing their history and need for support. It is presumed under the law that your child will stay at their current school when being placed in your home. Moving schools has been identified in data on children in foster care to put them behind 4-6 months in their education and also to have detrimental effects on them when they are removed from familiar environments and supportive teachers and friends during this time of upheaval in their lives
- Any lack of current information or updated records can delay transportation, emergency contacts, and other important school related services and notifications
- When a child is placed in your home, find out what school the child will be attending from your DFS Representative. Please provide your Placement Notification Letter (Letter) and any other contact information to get a hold of you to the School Clerk/Registrar so they can put your information into Infinite Campus. Call your child’s school to get the email address of who to send your Letter to.
IMPORTANT DATES
- March 8- End of 3rd Quarter
- Monday March 11- Friday March 15 | Spring Break NO SCHOOL

Happy Easter from all of us at The Children’s Service Guild!
We, The Children’s Service Guild of Southern Nevada, are working extremely hard for the children who are touched by the Clark County Family Courts. For over 50 years, we have lovingly helped them in numerous ways. The Guild strives to fill the needs that are not met by County funds. We are all volunteers, with no receiving pay of any kind, from our President on down. 100% of funds from fundraising and donations are used for them. We are always letting it be known, they are our mission!
Currently we are going over the applications for our College/Trade School scholarships and will make our decision on the recipients soon. Our goal is to give the students hope and a future.
*This month, we are sponsoring Easter Fun Express & Celebrate Kids Event hosted by Dept. of Family Services for foster families and children from Child Haven! Always a fun event!
**Also, we are hosting the Guild’s very own Easter Party with baskets, egg hunt and pictures with Mr. Easter Bunny for the children on Child Haven Campus.
***We are also funding Spring Break Excursions and Experience for Child Haven children, March 8th through the 15th. There would be four separate activities the children can participate in: Rex Center - tickets for Go Cart, Laser tag, mini golf, climbing wall; Bounce World; Springs Preserve; and Skating Rock City. Lots of smiles that week!
We also continue to fund various programs helping youth at SMYC and Detention. We give lots of kudos to all the staff with DJJS and DFS! Fantastic job helping the kids!
| |
**In February, we had our 10th Annual Valentine’s Cupcake Decorating Party for the kids at Child Haven! Lots of fun with frosting and sprinkles in the air as they decorated their homemade cupcakes and frosting. Also, they got their faces painted by Melonie, Darlo, Marci, and Doreen, that they loved!
