Career Education Master Plan

Learn more about the ideas that are under consideration for a new Master Plan for Career Education and ways that you can be involved in translating these ideas into concrete actions. Note: This is hosted by the state. Regional Convening for the Career Education Master Plan

The Governor’s Office will partner with statewide and community-based organizations to recruit attendees to ensure that the events have representation of these constituencies. The Governor’s Office is seeking diverse perspectives, including:


  • People who work in education institutions, including K12, adult schools, community colleges, CSU, UC, independent and private colleges
  • People who work in workforce and economic development entities
  • Employers
  • Labor representatives
  • Community-based and advocacy organizations that represent populations such as opportunity youth, first generation students, adult learners, people with disabilities, immigrants, and other disadvantaged and underinvested populations
  • Regional collaboratives and consortia
  • Technical assistance providers
  • Students and families


SAVE-THE-DATE! Registration portal will be opening soon. The region plans to provide a shuttle or bus from San Diego for those who want to ride together.

Communities of Practice

We again want to thank all of you who joined our regional Communities of Practice conversations around business, computing, and engineering. The virtual CoP's will pick back up in April, 2024. We will also be collaborating with the Golden State Pathways grant and Jewyl from the SDCOE to offer more CoP opportunities in other areas. Do be left out! BONUS: We wanted to offer an opportunity for our K-12, community college, university, and employer segments to get together and get to know one another better. We will be hosting an in-person event, BEERS AND GEARS, on Friday, March 15th for all CoP participants! Attendees will have the opportunity to network with colleagues in business, computing, and engineering from across educational segments, tour the MiraCosta TCI Engineering Tech facilities and visit the BrewTech lab for free beer tasting!

K-16 Undergraduate Student Internship Program - Education

We're Still Seeking Host LEAs!

The K-16 Collaborative is pleased to invite San Diego and Imperial County LEAs to host participating college students from our Undergraduate Student Internship Program. This program is designed to allow current college students to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience with K-12 students in order to better prepare for careers in teaching. We are still seeking K-12 LEAs to host undergraduate students at elementary, middle and/or high school sites during the 24-25 school year. To learn more about how your LEA can host participating college students, click on the button below to watch the recording, visit the K-16 website, or reach out to Jamie.

SDIRC Dual Enrollment Community of Practice Presentation


Save-the-date! On Wednesday, February 14, from 8:30-10 AM, the K-16 Collaborative team will be joined by a couple of our K-12 and community college partners to talk about an Early College Credit Ambassador Pilot Program that we are designing this spring to launch in Fall 2024.


Come join us to hear about a similar program from Mendocino College, our work with Imperial Valley College, ICOE, and the K12 districts in Imperial. As well as our work with Palomar College and 1-2 high school districts in their service area. Finally, Mallory will discuss ways to utilize future Dual Enrollment Grant funds to roll out similar pilots throughout the region.

The K-16 team is busy prepping for Summer 2024 internships for business, computing, and engineering students.

The K-16 Collaborative team will be presenting at the San Diego & Imperial Regional Consortium Workforce Development Council (WDC) meeting


Friday, February 9th

Members of WDC will hear more details about the 2024 Internship Program for college students seeking paid WBL opportunities in Business, Computing, Engineering and K-12 Education.


We hope to have 1-2 students and/or employers provide feedback about resumes, interviewing, and engagement!


K-16 Collaborative Participates in Equity Conference


The K-16 Collaborative team and postsecondary partners presented at the SDCOE’s 2024 Equity Conference. We hosted a session where several local community colleges and universities shared what they are doing to build more equitable talent pipelines at their respective institutions. As a group, we brainstormed ideas on how the region might work together to ensure our college-to-career pipelines are diverse, equitable, and aligned.

We were honored to be joined by our postsecondary panelists:

  • Aswad Allen, Chief Diversity Officer at the Office of Inclusive Excellence at CSUSM
  • Gerardo Arellano, Director, Raza Resource Centro and Campus Diversity Officer at UCSD
  • Luke Menchaca, Dean of Outreach and Student Affairs at the SDCCD 

We're Hiring!

To support our undergraduate student internship programs, we are hiring part-time support staff to work with prospective applicants and serve as the main point of contact for interested students. We are looking for one specialist for the Business, Computing, and Engineering internships - this individual will work with our existing Internship Specialist who supported Summer 2023 internships. We are also looking for one specialist for the Education internship program who will work with our K-12 Coordinator.   • Quarterly narrative reporting for activities from Oct 1-Dec 31, 2023 - Due February 1
  • Budget and expenditure reports for spending between June 30 - Dec 31, 2023 - Due February 1. Please contact Mayra with any questions.

Initiative of the Year Award!


Thank you to the Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation for awarding the Border Region Talent Pipeline Grant the Initiative of the Year award, sponsored by Equinox Gold. Sally and Christine had the pleasure of attending IVEDC's 17th Annual Dinner last week, where we heard the many great things happening throughout the county. We are very excited about all of the amazing work being done!
