Pool to be dedicated to Alvin Settles

The pool at the Charles Lind Brown Center will be dedicated to the memory of Alvin Settles at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14. The public is invited.

Settles was the much loved and admired man who taught countless children how to swim for more than 30 years at what was known then as the Greene Street Gym pool.

He taught many children and adults to swim -- many of whom would not have had lessons otherwise. He also taught swimming at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. His professional occupation was as a speech pathologist.

"Alvin had a major impact on the lives of so many children in Beaufort," said City Councilman Mitch Mitchell. "It's only fitting that this pool, where he taught so many children, be named in his honor."
