President's Message

Things have been going great in Idaho! The National Association of Health Underwriters has officially changed its name to the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals (NABIP) effective January 1, 2023. We’re all really excited about the name change and what it will bring to our association.

A hand full of members from around the state just got back from Washington DC and had a great time. I have never been so convinced of the important work our association does on behalf of our members and clients on a State and Federal level. Walking through the halls of congress and reading the name tags of all the lobbyists from so many different organizations I realize that everyone has a story to tell. From the pharmaceutical industry to the hospital associations, they are all telling their versions of the problems in our industry. If we don’t show up to tell our story then someone else will, and those someone’s probably won’t have our, or our clients, best interests in mind. The School House Rock days of “I’m just a Bill” are not the way things in DC always work anymore. Our political system has become much more complicated and we need a constant voice in DC and Boise. Idaho NABIP members know and understand that and also put their money where their mouth is. Idaho won multiple local and state awards for our member's generous contributions to HUPAC now NABIP PAC. I want to thank everyone for their time and/or money donations. We could not do what we do without our amazing Idaho members. I look forward to seeing everyone at our symposium in April.

Youth Speaks

Day on the Hill Report

We are happy to report that the 93rd annual Idaho Day on the Hill was a great success. I am just kidding about the 93 years. NAHU was started in 1930 and I do not know when the Idaho chapter was formed. We had close to 70 participants for the event during the day at the Lincoln Auditorium and 67 attendees for the dinner at the Crystal Ballroom. During the day we heard from our NABIP-Idaho lobbyist Benn Brocksome, Senator Kevin Cook, and Jason Ronk from our Platinum Sponsor BCI, Representative Ned Burns, Pat Kelly from Your Health Idaho, Dave Jeppesen from the Department of Health & Welfare and the Director of the Idaho Department of Insurance Dean Cameron wrapped up our afternoon.

Several additional Representatives and Senators attended our reception and dinner at the Crystal Ballroom. We were fortunate enough to have our very own Hilary Swidecki from NABIP-TV sing the National Anthem, followed by our dinner sponsor Mark Ruszcyzk from Regence BlueShield, Toni Lawson from the Idaho Hospital Association and our featured speaker Rebecca Bratsman explained her family’s experience with Medicaid Expansion. We changed up the menu this year and had more fresh veggies and a chicken and beef option rather than our Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and stuffing.

Thank you to the wonderful committee: Angie Jackson, Steve Moore, Wendy Leatham, Caroline Merritt,

Stephanie Hartruft, Emily Holthrop, Pedro Rojas, Guy Stubbs and Lisa Wilson.

Sincerely,

Phaedra Anderson

TVAHU Charity Bowling Event Raises $4244.82 for Idaho Community Outreach Behavioral Services (COBS)

Treasure Valley Association of Health Underwriters had an opportunity to bowl for charity on April 8, 2022. All proceeds benefited Idaho Community Outreach Behavioral Services (COBS). Community Outreach Behavioral Services is a 501(c)3 organization that provides trauma care for victims of human trafficking across Idaho. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that occurs in every state, including Idaho. COBS shares resources and works closely with service providers, law enforcement, and volunteers to rescue and serve victims and survivors of human trafficking. The TVAHU bowling event and raffle brought in $4,244.82. The organization graciously accepted the funds on 4/22 and plans to use the proceeds for expenses related to their safe houses in the Treasure Valley.

TVAHU Golf Tournament Raises $8225.75 to the Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline (ISPH)

Per a thank you letter from ISPH:

2022 was an important year for improving mental health and suicide prevention in Idaho. On July 16, 2022, 988, the new mental health crisis number went live across the nation. This number will make it easier for Idahoans to access support through an easy to remember phone number… Since our inception, we have responded to over 100,000 calls, texts, and chats.

TVAHU Charity Christmas Auction raises over $10,000 for the Boise City Light Home for Women and Children.

The TVAHU Annual Charity Breakfast and Silent Auction was a success for 2022! As the community service chair, it was an honor and privilege to give back to our community. Our organization was able to raise a total of $9,481 for City Light Women’s and Children’s Shelter! This includes the generous cash match donation from Fredrickson Insurance.

The silent auction was all virtual which allowed for an expanded audience and more competitive bidding! The breakfast was in person at Beside Bardenay in Downtown Boise which was great to see everyone and celebrate the holiday season together. The speakers were some of the women from City Light that shared their success stories and what the organization means to them. None of this would be possible without the support of our board AND membership.

Thank you to everyone that participated!

Vanguard

NABIP-TV hosts a Vanguard Event at Ragers Smash and & Axe.

To blow off steam after a busy Open Enrollment season, the Vanguard committee hosted an evening at Ragers Smash & Axe in January. The 30 participants were able to test their skills at axe throwing and those who wanted could break things in the Smash Room. We are excited to plan the next Vanguard event. Keep your eye out for more information soon. View event pictures here: Treasure Valley Association of Health Underwriters - Photo Gallery (tvahu.org)

NABIP Health Insurance Awareness Day

BOISE ID

The National Association of Benefit and Insurance Professionals Treasure Valley Chapter is hosted a Health Insurance Awareness Day in Boise on February 2, 2023. We partnered with First Thursday at Columbia Bank and had over 100 attend the event. Your Health Idaho as well as carriers and brokers were invited to attend and there was a great distribution of both.

Health Insurance Awareness Day offers members of the community to engage with health insurance professionals from around the valley with the purpose of raising awareness about the growing issue of the uninsured and give consumers free and immediate answers about the various types of health care coverage and health care. Attendees received valuable information on what the latest legislative initiatives are in Idaho Capital and Washington and how they will affect the health insurance industry. Health insurance agents, brokers, insurance carrier representatives and members of Your Health Idaho will be present to engage with community members.

NABIP-TV will plan our next Health Insurance Awareness Day will be held in June.
