Roosevelt Island Older Adult Center Members Celebrate 60th Wedding Anniversary

With February 14th around the corner, we are wishing all of our CBN friends and family a Happy Valentines Day!

Speaking of love, recently two longstanding members of our Roosevelt Island Older Adult Center (RIOAC), Barbara and Sheldon, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a party at CBN!

Barbara and Sheldon are active members of RIOAC and regularly take advantage of our many services including trips, special programs, workshops and lectures, and our congregate lunch program. They also always join us for parties (including our 2023 Senior Prom)! We are so grateful that they chose to celebrate their special day with us. Congratulations to Barbara and Sheldon!

Carter Burden Network Celebrates Our 53rd Anniversary

On January 18th, Carter Burden Network celebrated our 53rd Anniversary! For the past 53 years, CBN has been a leader in aging services, promoting the well-being of older adults 60 and older through a variety of programs, services, and events.

A huge thank you to all of our supporters, volunteers, staff, teaching artists, Board Members, and community partners for being a part of our mission delivery. We couldn’t do it without you! The History of Carter Burden Network

Carter Burden Network's roots began when then Councilman Carter Burden (shown being photographed by Andy Warhol in 1977 on the left) created the Carter Burden Center in 1971 in a storefront with only a single social worker to advocate for Upper East Side older adults.

CBN also celebrates our Founding Board Member, Susan Burden, along with our long-term Board Members, for their passionate and steadfast dedication to older New Yorkers these many years.

Events

Celebrations Across CBN

Carter Burden Network members had a blast celebrating with our Older Adult Centers this holiday season!

Members attended fun and festive parties, took CBN sponsored trips around the city, and enjoyed performances by our older adult members.

Additionally, members were able to keep warm thanks to a generous donation of high-quality, comfy socks from our generous corporate community partner, Bombas Socks, which were distributed as gifts during the holidays.

Christmas Day Luncheon at CBLC

The Carter Burden Luncheon Club’s annual Christmas Day Luncheon finally returned to CBN, and was a huge success!

Thanks to generous donations from CBN Board Members, older adults were able to enjoy a festive Christmas Day with CBN complete with lunch, decorations, holiday music with carolers, and delicious desserts. We are so grateful to continue this beloved CBN tradition, and cannot wait to celebrate many more to come!

CBN's Inaugural Senior Prom

Last November, Carter Burden Network held our Inaugural Senior Prom at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club for members across our four Older Adult Centers complete with dancing, music, delicious food, and the crowning of our Royal Court.

We are so proud and excited to announce that thanks to all of your generous support, we raised 100% of our fundraising goal of $600,000.

Thank you so much to the donors, members, CBN staff, community partners, and our high school volunteers from Eleanor Roosevelt H.S. for making this event so special. Your support of events like our Senior Prom as well as our daily programming helps to alleviate the loneliness and isolation associated with aging.

New Program Highlight

Healthy Aging Technology Center

Thanks to a generous grant from the Hearst Foundations supplemented by a grant grant from New York Presbyterian Hospital, Carter Burden Network launched the Healthy Aging Technology Center at our Covello Older Adult Center for East Harlem members!

With the help of our two new staff members, the Technology Educator and Falls Prevention Coordinator, this program brings comprehensive health-focused technology services to low-income older adults that improve their access to, comfort with, and use of technology, while also connecting them to tech-driven health and fitness activities such as falls prevention that address social determinants of health.

Volunteering at CBN

EILEEN FISHER Clothing Giveaway at RIOAC

Last December, members from our Roosevelt Island Older Adult Center received donated clothing from EILEEN FISHER!

This generous bi-annual donation is a part of EILEEN FISHER’s Renew, Rewear, and Reuse program and this year CBN received about 2,500 pieces of gently worn clothing. Our older adults were happy to receive such quality clothes to keep them warm for winter. Thank you so much to EILEEN FISHER for this amazing donation and to all the volunteers who helped organize this event!

Angi Brings the Holiday Spirit to Covello Older Adult Center

All of us at CBN would like to extend a big thank you to our volunteers at Angi, who not only hosted a fun Holiday bingo event for members at our Covello Older Adult Center, but also donated a Christmas Tree that helped spread holiday cheer throughout our halls.

Members had a great time playing bingo with volunteers, and loved the tree!

CBN Associates Council

CBN's Associates Council is a group of engaged young professionals dedicated to lending their talents, time and energy to benefit older adults as well as raise critical funds to support CBN's mission. As the organization's next generation of leaders and supporters, the Associates Council serves as advocates for CBN's crucial work combating isolation and loneliness, food insecurity, and serving older, vulnerable New Yorkers.

If you are interested in joining the Carter Burden Network Associates Council or would like to learn more about the Associates' volunteer opportunities or social events, please click here or email Patricia Mays, Director of Development and Communications, at maysp@carterburdennetwork.org.

Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in volunteering with Carter Burden Network? Plenty of opportunities are available for individual, group and corporate volunteers (including affinity groups), assisting with meal service, custom events, garden beautification, and more. Available Monday thru Saturday.

Read on to learn more about some of our popular volunteer opportunities. We hope to see you at one of our centers soon!

TELEPHONE REASSURANCE PROGRAM

The Telephone Reassurance program aims to combat isolation and loneliness, while also increasing companionship and amity through regular phone calls with volunteers.

FRIENDLY VISITNG

Volunteers participate in social visits with older adults who share common interests and hobbies. They serve as companions and may play a game, take a walk, chat about current events, and more!

GROCERY SHOPPING SERVICES

Volunteers assist older adults at the supermarket, or they may shop and deliver groceries to older adults who are unable to leave their home. This is a great way to get to know an older adult and it also serves the crucial function of ensuring that older adults have food in their homes.

For information on how to get involved, click here to visit our website, or contact Jenny Moreno, Director of Volunteer Services, at morenoj@carterburdennetwork.org.
