What’s key to making sure the innovation in our labs and classrooms is relevant and impactful, is that it moves from campus out into the world. Strong industry collaborations are crucial for that to happen. One of this month’s stories highlights how the newly launched Horiba Institute for Mobility and Connectivity can serve as a successful model of an academic-industry collaboration. But this story is so much more than just a partnership between two semi-abstract organizations. It is about a deeply personal relationship between Professor Emeritus Scott Samuelsen and his former student Atsushi Horiba, lasting almost 50 years.
This type of faculty commitment to student success is a hallmark of a UCI engineering experience. To that end, I am grateful to Distinguished Professors Tryphon Georgiou and Efi Foufoula for their generous investment in supporting our incoming graduate students. Please read on to learn more about this and our many other inspirational efforts.
Best,
Magnus Egerstedt, Ph.D.
