ENDURING PLACES: A SPECIAL EDITION OF CLASSICISM AT HOME
Against the striking backdrop of Charleston’s beautiful historic architecture, rich urban fabric, and thriving traditions of artisanship and design, 225 architects, designers, artisans, builders, academics, authors, students, and enthusiasts converged for a multi-day program that represents a pinnacle in the achievements of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). The ICAA’s national conference, Enduring Places, which took place from November 3rd to 5th, focused on themes of craftsmanship, preservation, and sustainability, and featured lectures and panel discussions led by renowned practitioners, film screenings and site visits that offered deeper explorations of Charleston’s legacy of architecture, design, and preservation, and tours of new projects that support thoughtful and contextual growth.

ICAA President Peter Lyden reflects on the groundbreaking Enduring Places conference, held by the ICAA in Charleston, South Carolina from November 3rd-5th.

ENDURING PLACES: ADDITIONAL COVERAGE
Classicism, at its heart, looks towards the future – shaping spaces built to last, communities that foster innovation, and built environments imbued with enduring beauty. At the ICAA, we champion this intrinsic quality of classical design – offering programming that both connects us to the past and inspires us to think towards the future.

Through interactive, hands-on coursework, our New Heights, Grand Tour, and Cast Hall programs inspire thousands of young minds to develop an appreciation for classical precedent while inspiring them to think mindfully about the communities that surround them. From there, our Summer Studio in Classical Architecture and University Workshops take our college-age students’ learning to the next level – immersing them in thought-provoking curricula that inspire them to apply their skills in a contemporary context while connecting to the rich legacy of the past.

In 2023 we’ve taken incredible strides to shape a future where classical architecture and allied arts continue to inspire, elevate, and connect people from all walks of life. To build upon this momentum, we hope you will consider making a contribution to the ICAA’s End of Year Campaign. Thanks to the generosity of our Board of Directors, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling its impact. In order to have the greatest effect and have your gift count towards this match, we encourage you to make a gift by December 15th.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will play a vital role in preserving the rich heritage of classicism, ensuring its longevity into the future.

ARTICLES & VIDEOS: PREVIOUS ISSUE
In this video, join the participants in the Christopher H. Browne Venice Drawing Tour, which took place this past May, as they explore the historic city's architectural legacy, studying and learning from precedent through the practice of measured and analytical field drawing.

The Christopher H. Browne Drawing Tours form the cornerstone of the ICAA education program. The tours follow in the footsteps of architects journeying abroad and at home to study and document precedents for the purpose of informing the design of new buildings and places. The course is structured around the tradition of measured and analytical field drawing in sketchbook as the primary means of building a compendium of resources for reference in future design endeavors. Each course examines the continuity and vitality of the classical tradition in a paradigmatic city or region that has been instrumental in its development. Drawing subjects cover all scales of design - from the city and its contiguous landscape as a comprehensive work of civic art, to the architectural composition of individual buildings, to the fine grain of architectural details, building craft, materials and the building arts.

2024 Christopher H. Browne Drawing Tours:

In 2024, the ICAA is pleased to offer the Christopher H. Browne Oxford Drawing Tour taking place from May 25th through June 1st, and the Christopher H. Browne New Orleans Drawing Tour, taking place from October 10th through 13th. Scholarships are available for both tours.

The Christopher H. Browne Drawing Tours honor the generosity, leadership, and legacy of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s late Trustee, Mr. Christopher H. Browne.
