DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND FILM ALUMNUS' WORK RECEIVES CANNES AWARDS

Cannes Award for Best Student Film July 2022

UToledo alumnus Gabriel Kovach (Film/Video '22) worked on a film that won awards at the 2022 Cannes World Film Festival. "After You," directed by Noah Pescara, won Best Student Film and Best Director of the Future in the July awards.

"Earlier this year, I worked as director of photography and composer for my cousin, Noah Pescara, who was completing his thesis film at American University in Washington DC," stated Kovach. "I was also attending UT full time, so with a lot of prior communication with profs, I was able to work in Virginia from February to March for pre-production and principle photography. It was essentially a two-person shoot, I took all of the responsibilities of the camera, lighting, and music departments, and Noah acted as director, producer, and editor."

Kovach is grateful for his education at UToledo. "As a student, it can be challenging to trust your own abilities and it becomes easy to fall into doubt, but through consistency (and many obstacles), we completed the film.... The Film faculty at UT pour their hearts and minds into the prospect that we are able to form tangible, meaningful relationships with cinema and find our own ability to speak through it.... I would also like to give a big thanks to Professor Holly Hey for always being my mentor and advocate."
