KNEWSLETTER - Vol. 67

Ahoy Marianne!

September is just about in our wake and October quickly rumbling up on us like a Blue Angel in the sky! Fleet Week (October 6-9) is one of the busiest weekends of the year and for good reason! It's FUN out there - but BE CAREFUL! We'd like to avoid it being a busy weekend for the boatyard as well. For your enjoyment, we've put together some interesting tidbits to help make Fleet Week more fun for everyone on board - Click here. Enjoy! And we'll see you out there!

Congratulations to all the Big Boat winners! We recognize plenty of you from passing through the yard. In particular, the J105 fleet - Congratulations to the top three boats who happen to be KKMI customers! Well done to all the boats and crew - we understand is was pretty brutal out there!

DID YOU KNOW?
Precautionary tales, preventative tips, interesting finds and practical pointers from our project managers and around the web

There are mnemonics in the sailing/boating world that we use that help us stay on course. They help us predict the weather, stay on the correct side of a buoy, remember how to tie knots, and stop us from making errors aboard. That is as long as we remember to use them!

We were reminded of one recently that could have saved this forestay... "before you hook up, look up!" REMEMBER! Make sure your halyard isn't wrapped round the forestay before attaching and hoisting. This carbon fiber forestay got "choked" by a halyard, causing it to break.

What's your favorite mnemonic?

The Berry family: Peter, Louise , daughters Kim and Jennifer heading out from Panama City Fl on Xanadu, Endeavor 32 in 1979 for a year sailing the East coast of US and the Bahamas. Fast forward and Kim, her partner Mark, sons Anson and Devon living aboard their 1972 Swan 41, Anthea, in Fiji. WHO KNEW?

The Anthea crew from a few years ago when they had sailed to New Zealand and we flew to the south island to tour for a month while Anthea was docked at the north island.

Your fearless leader and the yard folks all know Anthea well from a few years ago in your yard for an overhaul. Anson worked in the yard at the end of his high school time. Anson is now on a gap year before finishing a masters in Marine architecture and and engineering in South Hampton England and Devon will start undergrad at Santa Cruz this month. Kim and Mark have just retired from professorships at Humboldt State. Time flies!

“Move over Grandma, I’ll take the helm!” Emily Zugoni took her mom, Jeanette, and her grand sons sailing. They boys are recent graduates of the Alameda Sailing Community Sailing Center and had only sailed on boats with tillers. They were quite eager to give the wheel a try. A grand time was had by all.

Dennis Lear's little skippers - Enzo at the helm of an Ocean Alexander and Lucca trying to learn how to have fun in Tahoe

Paul Milo and his little Captainette who's starting preschool in a few days!

Jon Easterbrook and his grands on his Grand Banks.  Léonor learned to steer and push the horn!

Bob Hennessey and his granddaughter, Jovie - taking the wheel and Bob's heart!
