McLarty Treasure Museum
Florida in the 18th century remained an isolated outpost of the Spanish Empire. Its most important mission was to secure the homeward route of the Spanish New World Treasure Fleets. These fleets had long funded Spain's now-declining role in European & world affairs. The loss of the 1715 Fleet was another blow to Spain's newly established Bourbon dynasties. Gold and silver in great quantity were homeward bound to Philip V when a hurricane destroyed his fleet along Florida's coast. Some recovery in the aftermath still left much to be recovered beginning in the 1960s and ongoing to this day. Much research remains to be done on the 1715 Fleet and its treasure. The State of Florida has accumulated a magnificent and yet little studied collection of Fleet material.
The McLarty Treasure Museum paints the story of the ill-fated 1715 fleet. Exhibits and videos recount the history of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet and display feature artifacts, replicas for sale, and an observation deck on the Atlantic Ocean. More than 300 years later, salvagers still work offshore in hope of recovering the "Queen's Jewels."

Mel Fisher's Treasures Museum
In December 1992, world-famous treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, opened a permanent museum in Sebastian, Florida. Mel started his full-time treasure hunting career in Vero Beach, when he moved there with his wife Dolores and their family, from California in 1963. Mel spent the next 7 years successfully salvaging the 1715 Fleet, which is why the surrounding area got the name, "Florida's Treasure Coast". He then went on to discover the main pile of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha in July of 1985. This is the largest underwater treasure find in history. Mel's family continues to search for the remaining cargo of the Atocha today.
Visit the Mel Fisher Treasure Museum and dive into history. The experience is both educational and exciting - you can even lift an authentic Atocha gold bar! Join the millions who have witnessed this spectacular collection of cultural artifacts and treasures recovered from the ocean's depths.
