Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Lane Closures

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)

I-495 North

Monday, April 24, through Thursday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for sound wall demolition, jack and bore work, abutment work, and equipment repositioning.

Sunday, April 23 and Monday, April 24, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for lane restriping and realignment to implement traffic shift. Single lane closures will begin at 9:30 p.m. and triple lane closures will begin at 10 p.m. Learn more about the traffic shift here.

Tuesday, April 25, through Saturday, April 29, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple left lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George

Washington Memorial Parkway for joint repair work. Note: this work is scheduled to

take place nightly through the spring as weather conditions allow.

I-495 South

Monday, April 24, through Thursday, April 27, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closures on southbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for sound wall demolition, jack and bore work, abutment work, and equipment repositioning.

Tuesday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 26, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple lane closures on southbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for lane restriping and realignment to implement traffic shift. Monday, April 24, through Friday, April 28, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Mobile single lane closures on the southbound I-495 collector exit lanes for George Washington Memorial Parkway (Exit 43) and Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) as needed for traffic management.

LEWINSVILLE ROAD

Monday, April 24, through Friday, April 28, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lewinsville Road will be reduced to a single lane to accommodate sidewalk replacement work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect on the Lewinsville Road bridge over I-495.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE

Dulles Toll Road

Monday, April 24, through Thursday, April 27, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single left lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) at the I-495 interchange for bridge construction access.

Monday, April 24, through Friday, April 28, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closure on eastbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) at the I-495 interchange for bridge construction access.

Traffic Changes

Triple Lane Closures on I-495 to Implement Traffic Shift

Triple lane closures are scheduled on I-495 North on the nights of Sunday, April 23, and Monday, April 24, and on I-495 South on the nights of Tuesday, April 25, and Wednesday, April 26. These closures are necessary for crews to shift all four lanes of traffic in each direction to the inside portion of the Beltway, so that crews can build new lanes on the outer sides of the Beltway, making room for the future express lanes. Crews will need to eradicate existing lane markings and restripe the lanes before implementing this traffic shift. Learn more about the traffic shift here.

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
