FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thanks to everyone who attended my Fall Report presentation in the Little Theater last week, and the hundreds of folks that tuned in online. If you missed it, you can view the recording online, or read my remarks. In addition to discussing enrollment, budget, student success and fundraising, a few members of my administration provided updates from their perspectives. Provost Billie Gastic Rosado shared early findings for her listening tour, Human Resources Executive Director Marta Clark outlined the mission, values and goals for HR in the year ahead, and Executive Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Wendy Nicholson spoke about the process and input needed for LaGuardia’s Social Equity Plan. Looking ahead, please be sure to mark your calendars for a Town Hall on Friday, October 21; details coming soon.

Lace Up your Running Shoes for the LaGuardia Community Run on Saturday, October 22


LaGuardia Community Run is a fitness celebration that includes a 5K run/walk and an activity plaza featuring local businesses, sponsors, and the College community. Participants of all abilities ages 7+ may register now for the event, which steps off from LaGuardia’s parking lot, through the streets of Long Island City to the waterfront, and back. Volunteers are also welcome.


Need a practice run to get ready for the 3.1 miles? Join us for a 1 mile Tune Up on Wednesday, October 12. Team leaders will set the pace for both a run and walk; meet at 12:30 p.m. at Fall Fest in the M-Building Gym. (Remember to wear your sweats and sneaks!) 

Paid Internships for Spring 2023 Semester: Deadline is October 12, 2022


The Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD) asks for help encouraging students to apply (deadline: Wednesday, October 12) for paid internships through the new CUNY Spring Forward initiative. It’s an opportunity for LaGuardia students with no or limited work history to gain valuable professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, healthcare, science, technology, engineering and environmental preservation, or community and social services. Spring Forward interns will be placed with community health or public health organizations, immigrant rights organizations, city agencies, small businesses, science or technology companies, environmental preservation companies, and more. Internship opportunities start at the end of February and last until the beginning of May 2023. Interns make $20/hour and work 15 hours/week. Students must be eligible to work in the United States. CCPD is facilitating Spring Forward internships in healthcare. Students interested in healthcare can send questions to healthcarespringforward@lagcc.cuny.edu.

LaGuardia Leads 15+ CUNY Colleges in Launching the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium


LaGuardia Community College has joined with 15 CUNY colleges to launch the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium, through which faculty, staff and students will archive LGBTQIA+ history across New York, and support LGBTQIA+ training, education, and programming at the colleges. LaGuardia professor Allie Brashears is director of the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium. Dr. Brashears is an associate professor of biology and director of LGBTQ+ Programming at the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, which first brought together the five CUNY campuses in Queens to march under one CUNY banner at the annual Queens Pride Parade. President Kenneth Adams spoke at Consortium’s official launch at the CUNY School of Law on Friday, September 23, 2022.

Submission Deadline for Campus Events/Programming Funding Requests: Friday, October 14, 5 p.m.


The deadline to submit co-curricular and College Association funding requests is Friday, October 14 at 5 p.m. To be considered for co-curricular funding, the program/activity must target a minimum of 100 students. The proposal may include a yearlong series of activities that reach a range of students in a program or across programs. Additional requirements include programming that connects theory/classroom learning to practice; actively engages students in dialogue, inquiry, experiential learning, and/or reflection; incorporates ePortfolio; and links to at least one core competency (global, integrative learning, inquiry and problem solving) as well as one dimension from the respective rubric. To be considered for College Association funding, the event/activity must be for a specific class within the college community. Students must go through the Student Advisory Council (SAC) first before proposing to College Association. The College Association Budget Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, October 19 to review submissions. 

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Possibilities with a Social Science Degree


Please encourage your students to attend a Social Science Career Day on Wednesday, October 12, from 2–4 p.m. (via Zoom), hosted by the Social Science Department. Topics will include the disciplines of social science, and career opportunities with social science degrees. Representatives of ASAP, Pre-College Academic Programming of Adult and Continuing Education, Student Advising Services, and the Center for Career & Professional Development will offer advice on career exploration and job searching, and review college resources and services where students can find support. Pre-registration is required.

CAMPUS LIFE

LaGuardia Hosts National Voter Registration Day Event


On Tuesday, September 20, National Voter Registration Day, LaGuardia's Campus Life held an ice cream social. More than 150 students received a scoop of Haagen Daz ice cream, and learned about “History of Voting in the United States” and “Moments in Latinx/Hispanic Civic Rights.” Approximately 45 students registered to vote. Special thanks to Thomas Cleary, Librarian & Archivist for leading the discussion.

Welcome Back BBQ Engages Students


On Wednesday, September 28, Campus Life held the Welcome Back BBQ and Books for Bingo. Both events engaged more than 290 students. "It was nice to see students smiling and connecting on the campus again," said Donnice Davis, Interim Associate Director of Campus Life. ​Special thanks to Dr. Fay Butler and contributing partners BMEC & Crear Futuros, Student Government Association, Communications and External Affairs, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, MBJ, SIC, Business Affairs and Purchasing department.

LaGuardia Among Colleges Participating in Green Workforce Development Program


LaGuardia is one of six CUNY campuses to that are the initial recipients of $3.98 million in City funding to help train the next generation of professionals for climate-smart careers. Along with Kingsborough Community College and City Tech, LaGuardia will expand its Bridge to Offshore Wind program.

Executive Director Engages Supporters in Philanthropic Efforts


Jay Golan started September 6 as Executive Director of the LaGuardia Community College Foundation. This new position is generously funded by the Foundation. Mr. Golan has spent more than three decades in nonprofit management. In his most recent position as Vice President for Advancement for the CUNY Graduate Center and Executive Director of the Graduate Center Foundation, he was responsible for all private philanthropy funneled through this supporting foundation and for a 20-member Foundation Board. "I've been so impressed with the energy and enthusiasm all over the LaGuardia community, from students and faculty, to the Foundation Board," Golan said. "It's a great time for the Foundation, having raised $15 million, and figuring out how to help students even more in the future."

Foundation Board Meets to Discuss Upcoming Initiatives


The LaGuardia Community College Foundation meets quarterly and focuses on students and programs designed to help them be successful. At the September meeting, Sunil Gupta and Jessica Perez and two students spoke about internship opportunities for ACE students and discussed on-going efforts to build a strong network of companies, non-profits and agencies to give students experiences paid for by corporations or the Foundation. Several Foundation Board members are part of this network and shared their experiences.

Golf Outing Raises Funds In Support of LaGuardia Students


The wind and the rain didn’t dampen the fun and game at the 9th Annual Mark C. Healy Scholarship Fund Golf Outing on October 3rd in Northport NY. The LaGuardia Community College Foundation teamed up with Mark Healy (1983 LaGuardia alum) to host the annual fundraiser that raised $42,000 in scholarships for LaGuardia students. Over 50 players, including LaGuardia faculty and staff, and sponsors AST, BGBY Investments, and Eastman Cooke Construction, took part in the event.

Hispanic Heritage Month: New college center opens for Latino students in Queens

LaGuardia Community College has more than 8,000 Latino students pursuing their college degrees right now, coming from more than 31 different countries. Many are first-generation college students. Now, they have a new place to find support. Dr. Sonia Alejandra Rodriguez and Dr. Ryan Mann-Hamilton have created a place where thousands of Latino students can find community and support.

Honoring Exceptional Women

Assembly Member Catherine Nolan and LaGuardia Community College President Kenneth Adams honored their colleagues, women in government, education, the arts and business who have “made a difference, shown leadership, and continued to inspire us.” Those recognized included Professor of Mathematics Reem Jaafar, Administrative and Support Services Director Evelyn Lowmark, and Workforce Development Senior Director Hannah Weinstock.


GOVERNMENT TECHNOLOGY:

CUNY to Use $4M in City Funding for Green Workforce Programs

Six CUNY colleges that will receive $4 million to develop curriculum and help students find jobs in the green energy sector. LaGuardia Community College, Kingsborough Community College and City Tech’s Bridge to Offshore Wind Program, which will expose students to offshore wind careers, as well as education and training demands from within the industry. HUMAN RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL UPDATES

LaGuardia Welcomes Chief Diversity Officer


Craig Greene joined LaGuardia on September 26, filling the important role of Chief Diversity Officer. Mr. Greene has more 15 years of public sector compliance and human resource experience with extensive administrative, legal, and D&I expertise. Mr. Greene has led EEO and compliance teams for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the New York City Department of Design and Construction. His office is located in Legal Affairs, Room E-512.


Annual Training Courses Now Available

The University's Employee Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Course (ESPARC) and Workplace Violence Prevention Training (WVP) are now available for the 2022-2023 academic year. All part-time employees, including adjuncts, are responsible for completing both trainings by the end of the current semester to ensure their completion is logged by the University. Inactive employees on a short work break or leave of absence will not have access to the courses. All full-time employees will have until Wednesday, May 31, 2023 to complete the trainings.

 

Employees are automatically registered for the training in Blackboard as long as they are active in CUNYfirst. All active employees can sign into their CUNY Blackboard account and navigate to the My Organizations link to view and complete both the ESPARC and WVP trainings.

Human Resources Hosts Investing Webinar

LaGuardia's HR Department is hosting the webinar "Responsible Investing: Unlocking investment potential while making an enduring impact on our world" at 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 26. During the webinar, you can learn more about evolving investment discipline, what’s driving investor demand, and the potential benefits of incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) funds into your retirement portfolio. ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT

The Enrollment Management offices were quite busy during the peak period. There were 25,872 admission applicants for Fall 2022 which is a 15.5% increase from Fall 2021. Of the 5,880 students who accepted the offer of admissions 3,711 registered (63.11%) which is the highest amongst the CUNY Community Colleges. Additionally, Enrollment Services staff participated in welcoming over two-thousand students back to campus during the first week of Fall I classes.
