FPC Ministry Road Map

There are so many opportunities for education, spiritual nurture, and fellowship with the congregation of First Presbyterian Church that we have prepared a road map to help you find those that interest you most. The points on the compass are Children’s Ministry, Student Ministry, College Ministry, and Adult Ministry. At the center of it all is our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Children’s Ministry

At FPC we love children! Our top priorities are nurturing and teaching children in God’s Word while keeping them safe. All teachers and volunteers have been background checked, and we have two teachers in the nursery and in the classrooms when possible. When there is only one teacher in the room, the door remains open and a volunteer is in the hall.

Sunday Morning

  • Nursery for ages birth to 3 years is available during Sunday School and each worship service.
  • Kids’ Kirk, age-appropriate worship and learning for age 4 through second grade, is held in the Education Wing for the remainder of the service after the passing of the peace.
  • Sunday School (10:10 to 10:50)

          Preschool (3- and 4-year-olds)

Student Ministry

  • Middle School Sunday School (6th–8th grade), 10:15 a.m.
  • High School (9th–12th grade) Coffee House, 10:15 a.m.

  • Confirmation (7th and 8th grade)
  • High School Devos (9th–12th grade)

College Ministry

This ministry works with staff from King University to transform its students by the power of the Gospel. Efforts include weekly gatherings for worship and fellowship that seek to cultivate discipleship and faith relationships. Several mission projects aid this endeavor.

Weekly Opportunities

  • Monday Bible study: Student-led, 9:00–10:00 a.m., King’s Den on the King campus.
  • Wednesday Chapel: Worship-led service, 9:00–10:00 a.m. (Rehearsal on Tuesday, 6:00–8:00 p.m.)
  • Wednesday Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 9:00 p.m., Student Center cafeteria.
  • Sunday Worship Night: 7:00; location alternates between FPC and King University.

Special Semester Opportunities

  • Fall 2022: Serve Bristol: cleaning downtown Cumberland Park and providing Blessing Bags for homeless folks.
  • Spring 2023: Beseech24: a 24-hour prayer and worship gathering on the Oval and in the chapel, King campus.

Potential Missions

  • Egypt with Dr. Ong (Summer 2023?)
  • Bahamas with Chase Arndt (Spring 2023?)
  • KingReach Weekly Podcast, Room 124

Adult Ministry

There are many engaging opportunities here at First Presbyterian for learning to serve and to follow.

Sunday School (10:15–10:50 a.m.)

  • Inductive Bible Study, Room 167.
  • Young Professionals, a line-by-line, verse-by-verse Gospel study that looks at contemporary issues, College Classroom (Room 163).
  • General Adult Class, an enriching look at books of the Bible, Room 123.
  • Friendship Class for special-needs adults, Friendship Room.

Home Groups are weekly gatherings of six to 12 people who meet together for 10 to 12 weeks each semester to study specific Bible narratives and topics in a thematic progression. The children’s, youth, and adult programs complement Sunday morning worship. You may join an ongoing Home Group or start a new one. There are evening and morning options on different days of the week. Contact Dave Welch ([email protected]) for more information.

Wednesday Night Programs

On Wednesday night you can participate in a time of renewal in fellowship, learning, and worship that revolves around two important gatherings:

  • All-church, family-style dinner, 5:30–6:00, fellowship hall.
  • Adult study with the pastors, 6:15–7:00, chapel.

Weekly Bible Studies

  • Men of the church meet each Thursday morning at 7:00 in the parlor.
  • Women of the church meet each Thursday afternoon from 1:00 to 2:30. This group is currently meeting in room 123.

for Pumpkin Palooza

FPC is the place to be on Sunday, October 23, at 2:00 p.m. We’re having an all-church gathering we’re calling Pumpkin Palooza. We’ll paint pumpkins, plant pansies, play games, and nosh. Be there or be that geometric shape that no one would mistake for a pumpkin!

Join Us for Wednesday Night Fellowship

Our Wednesday night programming continues October 19 with supper in the fellowship hall at 5:30, followed by activities for children, teens, and adults. Our Adult Enrichment program in the chapel will continue our Life Together series. Please join us!

Organist's Footnotes

BWV 812–817 are six suites that Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) wrote for the clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) between 1722 and 1725. They later came to be called the French Suites. Johann Nikolaus Forkel wrote in his 1802 biography of Bach, “One usually calls them French Suites because they are written in the French manner.” This claim, however, is inaccurate: like Bach’s other suites, they follow a largely Italian convention. Some of the manuscripts that have come down to us are titled Suites pour le Clavecin, which is what probably led to the tradition of calling them French suites.

Whatever they are called, they are delightful pieces. I learned to play several of these suites as a teenager for my piano lessons. Playing them on the harpsichord, however, brings out their true character. To give a taste of this, I will use one of the harpsichord settings on the keyboard. Close your eyes and imagine you are hearing the real thing. The prelude is the opening “Allemande” from Suite II in C minor. The postlude is the “Gavotte” from Suite V in G Major, the manuscript of which is pictured above.
