Monday, Dec 4th School Funding Event Recap

Thank you to those that joined our engaging parent education event on Monday on School Funding in Washington. Our presentations from Dr. David Knight (UW) and Robert Cruickshank (Washington’s Paramount Duty) were informative and timely. If you missed the event, you can see the slides here..

We also wrote over 50 postcards advocating to our state legislators on our priorities for fully funding public education. Reaching out to share your priorities with your elected officials makes a difference. Stop by our table at next week’s Book Swap and fill out your own postcard to support our schools! There will be many advocacy opportunities for the next legislative session - please tune in and help support our schools!

Annual Appeal: Status Update

Family Match Met!

Thanks to generous donations from you we were able to meet our family match opportunity by the December 1st deadline. Nice work!

To date, we’ve raised $56,387 toward our overall goal of $175,000! Last year we raised $99,000 by December 31, and we hope to meet that target again this year.

The budget deficit for SPS next year is over $100 million! Fundraising is one important way to provide stability for our school in the face of continued cuts. Please consider donating to the TCPG Annual Appeal today. We know not everyone will meet the requested $400/student, and we ask you to give an amount that is meaningful for your family. If you can go above and beyond to help us reach our goal, we sincerely thank you!

Don’t Forget About Employer Matching!

Employer matching is a crucial strategy to allow us to reach our goal, and we know we are leaving money on the table every year. We’re committed to supporting you if you need any help in this regard!

Please email fundraising@thorntoncreekparentgroup.org and we’ll work with you to find the information.

Every match helps get us closer to our goal. Here are some companies with very generous annual matching programs: Microsoft ($15k), Boeing ($10k), SalesForce ($5k), Google ($10K), and Apple ($10k). Just to name a few!

FUTURE PARENT EDUCATION EVENTS (your input requested!)

For the last several years, the parent groups have coordinated to sponsor parent education events. Please share your ideas to inform events during the second half of this school year. Our aim is to develop events that are relevant to your interest and learning goals. Gathering your feedback is important to us. We will review all comments and greatly appreciate your feedback and suggestions. If possible, please share your input by mid-January, here.

Expedition Corner: Western Red Cedar in Botanical Medicine

The Western Red Cedar, or Thuja plicata, is one of the three most important herbs known in the Pacific Northwest given how effective, widespread, and revered it is.

We’ve learned already how this tree was one of the most important species for the coast people of the PNW. One reason it was used to make canoes and many other objects is that its wood is high in potent antimicrobial terpenoids that resist rot. Its leaves, too, have broad-spectrum antimicrobial (and antifungal) properties that can be prepared as a tincture or even added to a wonderfully aromatic chest rub.

Happy Hanukkah!

We wish everyone who celebrates Hanukkah a light-filled and hopeful week!

Gratitude for Our Incredible Community!
