An Introduction to CSU Pueblo’s Indigenous Land Acknowledgement

On behalf of Title V and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Share a traditional Indigenous meal with campus community as we engage in a professional development opportunity to support the establishment of the CSU Pueblo Land Acknowledgement. Join us in a safe space to provide input, share knowledge of the stewards of this land, and in honoring traditional practices. The development of a land acknowledgement is not the final outcome of our efforts to support our Indigenous community, rather it is a discussion of the future while honoring the past.

The opening ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. CSU Pueblo is honored to create space for the Indigenous stewards from our community to participate. If you would like to support us in building community by participating in the opening ceremony, please indicate your participation using the RSVP link provided.

Discussion begins at 5:30 and the official CSU Pueblo Land Acknowledgement will be shared at 6 p.m. Please RSVP to support the organizers in planning accordingly.

John Giordanengo - The Roots & Building of a Sustainable Pueblo Economy: Lessons from Nature

On behalf of Library Services

John H. Giordanengo, national speaker, Colorado author, and conservationist, will explore the roots of a sustainable economy, by applying lessons from nature. Ecosystems are masters of resilience, sustaining their productivity over eons of fires, floods, and pestilence. They accomplish this by sourcing energy locally, strategic diversification, and other jungle principles showcased in this fresh talk. If we apply these lessons to our economies, what are the implications for community resilience, social justice, job creation, productivity, and a wide range of social and environmental benefits? Explore this timely question with John Giordenango.

NEW: Art Opening: Art Exhibition of Indigenous Artist Gregg Deal

On behalf of the Department of Art and Creative Media

The art work of Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe) challenges and critiques the ways in which the representation of Indigenous people in American society have been confined, controlled, and stereotyped. Through his work he creates unapologetic commentary on stereotypes, politics, history, and culture, exploring these conversations through sculpture, painting, installation, performance, murals, and more. His purposefully broad medium choices allow him to pick apart and dismantle these issues in their entirety. His art is purposefully disruptive, seeking to shake ideas while also being a vessel for therapeutic self-healing and self-expression. He is an artist and an activist, his work going hand in hand with his involvement in the political sphere.

Gregg Deal has exhibited nationally and internationally, notably in the Denver Art Museum, and Smithsonian Institution. He has lectured extensively at museums, universities across the country. His appearances include televised specials on PBS’s The Art District, The Daily Show and Totally Biased with Kamau Bell.

This solo exhibition was curated by CSU-P students from the Exhibiting Chicano/a, Hispanic and Indigenous Art course class under the direction of assistant professor, Matthew Garcia. This exhibition is part of the Hispanic, Chicanx and Indigenous Exhibition Series created by the CSU Pueblo Department of Art and Creative Media.
