Wild Scallions
August has begun and so has the orchard harvest! This week we will have some very tasty heirloom seckel pears, asian pears and southern heirloom apples. After watching the orchard grow for the last ten years, it is a little magical to see many of the trees full of fruit this year!

Plenty of summer goodness from the fields this week too: field tomatoes, cherry tomato pints, peppers, eggplant, okra, garlic, onions, scallions, bitter gourd, cucumber and more nice sweet crunchy Korean melons.

Also look for an abundance of blooms: dahlias, zinnias, marigold, lisianthus and plenty of mixed bouquets.

All our produce, flowers and plants are certified naturally grown for healthful foods from healthy fields!

Looking forward to seeing everyone!
Matt and Renee

This week’s recipe is a super simple one. Remember the quadrant “sandwiches” trend using a tortilla or wrap? Well, you can make a quadrant kimbap (rice on seaweed) with a fried egg and kimchi! It’s a dish inspired by the latest K-Drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix. Check it out here:

You can preorder for delivery or pickup at market. To get $2 off 2 or more jars — just use coupon code 2jars. You must have a minimum order of 2 jars.

Current menu: Napa cabbage, green cabbage, green garlic, radish, mustard greens, turnip, brussel sprouts, collard greens, sweet onion, kohlrabi and carrot

Fruchtenicht Honey
In recent years interest has grown in the comparison between animal intelligence and that of humans. The possibility of consciousness in animals and how that might look is now discussed. I’ll stay away from consciousness because I’m not clear on how to define or measure it, but consensus grows that intelligence in the animal world is relative, not merely a human ability. Chimps, elephants, octopuses, are all getting more respect.
The brain of the lowly honey bee has about a million neurons while the human cerebral cortex has perhaps 120 billion. Our abilities and accomplishments are well-known. But the humble honey bee is no slouch. The colony as a whole has complex behaviours that are stable from year to year even though the worker population turns over completely within months. Bees can communicate distance and direction of food sources, alert their fellows to attack an intruder, keep the hive clean, store food for winter, raise brood, raise replacement queens as needed who somehow know to fly to drone congregation areas to be mated. All this and more has traditionally been described as “instinctive”, a series of stimulus/response behaviors. It’s a frame hard to maintain.
Human achievements are much more impressive. We’ve learned to make complex machines and co-operate to manipulate nature. Art, literature, the Webb telescope, CRISPR, and who knows what’s to follow. But traditional distinctions from    animals like our death awareness, well, who knows what animals are and are not aware of? Free will? Taking quite a pounding lately from philosophers and psychologists. Perhaps we’re not so removed from animal instinct in our thinking.
If we choose to define intelligence as an optimal relation to one’s world, there are other human achievements we have to also consider: nuclear weapons, stripping the world’s oceans of fish to feed our cats and dogs, chemicals we invent that steadily poison the environment, denial that ever- increasing human population is a problem, our feeble response to human caused climate change . . . hmm. In the words of a character from the Coen brother’s film Blood Simple — “Who looks stupid now?”

We are a family owned and operated business based out of East Durham, with a passion for our community. The food that we make is deeply connected to our identity and roots; we use family recipes that have been passed down for generations here in the South, as well as inspiration for flavors and recipes from our Afro Diasporic roots. We use equitable business practices by using local and organic food whenever possible, using sustainable products, and paying all of our employees a living wage.

Chapel Hill Creamery
We are still a little tight on our milk supply, even though the cows have wonderful grass to graze, so certain cheeses are in short supply. Thanks for supporting us throughout the year as well as the summer months.

Farmhouse Cheese:  Come early for Fresh Mozzarella and enjoy it now for Caprese Salad, bruschetta, pasta. We also have Dairyland Farmers, Thunder Mt. Swiss aged since November, savory Hickory Grove, Calvander, Carolina Moon, semi-ripe New Moon, YoYo and some Hot Farmers. Use our tangy farmers cheese in chopped salads with cucumbers and cherry tomatoes, or in tomato sandwiches. Thunder Mt. Swiss is our strongest cheese and perfect to add to a squash casserole or a grilled cheese sandwich with sauteed mushrooms

Pastured Beef:  SPECIAL PRICE: Lean Ground Round is 2 packs for $14.00. We should have a few beef cuts and our ground beef. Make a great cheeseburger with our Hickory Grove cheese; use ground round for a taco salad with our Farmers cheese.

Ninth Street Bakery
This Week: Whole Wheat Levain; Country Loaves; Hot Cross Buns

About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. Helmed by baker Ari Berenbaum
since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We give back to the community via our Bakery- and donor-supported Durham Neighbors program, an in-house experiment in Universal Basic Income whereby we Cashapp 100+ low-income local families every month $50 which goes to much-needed groceries, utility bills, or diapers. We are psyched to be now an official member of the Durham Farmer’s Market, joining an illustrious crew of artisans and purveyors who are dedicated to local, independent, small business, and Southern gastronomical culture. Planning and execution is in full gear now for the small farmer fundraiser, Farm-to-Fork feast on top of a hill in a hay field on the family farm... "Dinner in the Meadow." The 10-member planning team continues to meet on Sunday afternoons at the farmhouse... we are finalizing the details.. and hope for good weather on Sunday, September 11th.. Buy you tickets soon before we SELL out... Thanks for supporting small farmers in the region.. in memory of two "foodies" in my life, my late mother, Marjorie, and late husband, Steve.. both farmers.  A ticket or two would make a wonderful gift for someone who loves eating fresh, healthy, and local.  Your business/family & friends could also sponsor a table for 8.. consider that option also.

Hay harvest starts again this week... during this dry spell. This hay will be used for winter hay feeding for the livestock. Mario and Salvador continue to plant, hand weed, and harvest lots of wonderful organic vegetables. Special this week are the SUNGOLD tomatoes and large cabbage.  Peppers, both spicy padrons and shishito, are starting to be harvested along with 3 varieties of eggplant.
