Alcohol and Tobacco Use among Older Adults in the US: A Lifecourse Perspective
presented by
Pia Mauro, PhD
Assistant Professor of Epidemiology

NJ ACTS Congratulates KL2 Scholar Kristine Schmitz, MD
A study led by Dr. Schmitz, assistant professor of pediatrics, found that a father’s depression in the first year of their child’s life was strongly associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) by the time children were 5 years old and were transitioning into kindergarten.
Dr. Schmitz presented the study at the American Academy of Pediatrics national conference in October. The study has received broad media coverage, including this video in which Dr. Schmitz discussed the study with Healio while at the conference and in Contemporary Pediatrics, and HealthDay.

NJ ACTS KL2 Scholar Gregory Peck Featured in Rutgers Today
KL2 Scholar, Gregory Peck, MD, MPH, was featured in Rutgers Today on November 13, 2023. The article narrates Dr. Peck's transition from a full-time trauma surgeon to a surgeon epidemiologist, exploring ways to keep people out of the emergency room by educating people to seek care earlier, whether in a physician's office, through a medication regime or through elective surgery. The article talks about his inspiration for this change as well as his indirect pathway to becoming a surgeon.
Dr. Peck is now funded through a K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award to study population-based data to understand and to decrease less safe emergency surgery, moving toward safer non-emergency surgery or non-surgical care, for patients with gallstone disease, with the ultimate goal of decreasing the overall US mortality of in these patients.

Tourette International Collaborative (TIC) Genetics Study
The newest video in the series highlights the Tourette International Collaborative (TIC) Genetics Study. In 2011, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recognized the NJ Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders (NJCTS) Cell & DNA Sharing Repository as an important federal research asset and funded its expansion. This led the Rutgers/NJCTS partnership to establish the Tourette International Collaborative Genetics (TIC Genetics) study, that includes 25 sites across the United States, Europe, and South Korea, in turn, making the Rutgers facility the world’s largest sharing cell and DNA repository for Tourette Syndrome.
Gary Heiman, Associate Professor, Rutgers Department of Genetics, discusses the study in terms of Team Science with international collboration.
