Weekly Update

A Message from Principal Simpson

Diana Simpson

Dear Parents,

Our campus has been busy with a lot of exciting events and learning opportunities this week! Last Saturday, the PTO hosted the Sweetheart Ball. From all accounts and the fun pictures I’ve seen, everyone had a wonderful time. Thank you to the PTO for hosting this annual event! In addition, this week our kindergarteners went to the Children's Museum, our first graders went inside the Earth Balloon (pictured below), and the fourth graders made their yearly trek to the Colorado State Capitol and the History Colorado Center. This afternoon, we are hosting the A and B team girls basketball games. Go Bolts!

One of our initiatives this year is enhancing our middle school electives program. For those of you unfamiliar with our electives program, each middle school student selects two electives each trimester. As part of the review and enhancement process, we would like community feedback from our fourth-eighth grade families. If you have a 4th-8th grade student, please take a few minutes to complete this short survey. It should only take around five minutes and will help guide our discussions. We appreciate your time and feedback.

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of Feb. 12. Parents of students in grades K-4 will receive a sign-up from your teacher by early next week. Teachers in grades 5-8 are hosting drop-in conferences for parents.

We are seeing an increase of students being dropped off before 7:45 a.m. and parents wanting to pick up their students from the front office after the office closes for carpool at 3 p.m. The school opens to students 30 minutes before school starts. If you need to drop your student off prior to the doors opening at 7:45 a.m., you will need to register for our morning BASE program. There’s more detailed information below regarding afternoon pick-ups, but please note anyone coming to the front office at/after 3:00 p.m. for a pick-up will be directed to carpool.

We have enjoyed the mild weather this week, though it looks like winter returns this weekend. I hope everyone stays warm and enjoys the snow!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Simpson

Board of Directors Call for Nominations

BFA Board of Directors: Call for 2024 Nominations

In case you missed the email sent earlier today, the Succession Committee of the BFA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the BFA Board of Directors ("Board") is open and will remain so until 11:59 p.m. MST on Friday, March 1, 2024. The BFA Board of Directors is responsible for the strategic direction and the policies that govern Ben Franklin Academy. Each of the seven members of the Board has something special and unique to bring to the Board, and we all work together to support the mission and vision of BFA.

Please consider nominating yourself or someone you know for the BFA Board of Directors. We are seeking leaders who are passionate and committed to the mission, vision, and long-term strategic plan of BFA to serve on the Board. This is a very fulfilling experience for the right individual.

In 2024, there are two (2) open director seats on the BFA Board, which will be filled according to the Board of Directors Election Policy. One (1) director will be elected by the School Voting Group, and one (1) director will be appointed by the BFA Board.

2024 Call for Nominations

The current call for nominations is for the following BFA Board seats:

  • Seat 1, Class A, is currently occupied by Mette Castor. Mette has served on the Board for three (3) years and is eligible to seek re-election. This seat serves a three-year term, ending in May 2027, and is elected by the BFA School Voting Group.
  • Seat 2, Class A, is currently occupied by Haley Maglieri. Haley has served on the Board for three (3) years and is eligible to seek re-election. This seat serves a three-year term, ending in May 2027, and is appointed by the BFA School Voting Group.

2024 BFA Board Election/Appointment Process

To nominate someone (including yourself) for the BFA Board, click here to complete the nomination form. Nominations from the BFA School Voting Group must be submitted online before 11:59 p.m. (MST) on March 1, 2024.

For the Board-appointed seat, nominees may be selected by the Board from the School Voting Group's nominations or nominated by a Board director at any time. The Board reserves all rights to fill Seat 2, Class A.

Voting for the Seat 1, Class A director will take place electronically from Monday, April 1, until 11:59 p.m. (MST) on Sunday, April 12, 2024. Results of the election will be announced and the appointment will be made on April 16, 2024, at the regularly scheduled Board meeting. All Board nominees are encouraged to be in attendance for the results of both (1) the election and (1) the appointment.

To see the qualifications to serve on the Board and for more detailed information, including FAQs, see the email sent earlier today, Feb. 1, the Elections webpage and/or the article on our website.

If you are interested in learning more, please email Keri Street (keri@bfacademy.org), Adam Lucero (adaml@bfacademy.org), or any of our Board members. Thank you!

Please Read this Important Reminder

As a reminder, the front office is closed from 3 – 4 p.m. each school day so the staff can manage carpool. If you need to pick up your student early for an appointment, please do so before 3 p.m. This means you should arrive at school well in advance of 3 p.m. because there are many other parents picking up students at the same time and the process of locating students at the end of the day can take some time—especially middle school kids.

In addition, we kindly ask that your vehicle is out of the carpool zone by 3 p.m. so we can begin the carpool process. Note: Calling the office or emailing traffic@bfacademy.org at the beginning of the day to notify us of an early pick up is helpful; but, calling after 2 p.m. only slows the process of retrieving students for other parents.

We're very happy to partner with you in ensuring you are able to pick up your student(s) as needed, and sincerely appreciate your understanding of our processes.

A Record Number Attended the Mardi Gras Masquerade

Thank you to all who helped make the PTO's Sweetheart Ball a success! We especially want to recognize the event chair Katie Graham, as well as social coordinator, Ewelina Chrzanowski.

There were around 500 attendees--a record number, who enjoyed dancing, games, desserts and gelato! Thank you to all who donated baked goods and those who helped with the event!

We also sincerely appreciate our sponsors: Gelato & Co, Destiny Dance Studio, Born2Bake and Kaitlin Kinney with West & Main Homes. And, we're very grateful to the wonderful photographer, Heather Enberg, owner of Enberg Photography.

In the coming weeks, each family that attended and had a photo taken will receive a 5x7 photo.

Something to Celebrate? Rent the Rock!

The Spirit Rock is an opportunity to share exciting events with our school community by painting your own message. Parents, students, and staff may rent the Rock to recognize a student’s birthday, show school spirit, wish a team good luck, thank a teacher, announce an event, etc. It is a great way to spread positive messages and increase excitement! The rate to rent the Rock is $20 per day. All proceeds directly benefit the BFA PTO!

Want to Rent the Rock? Here’s how:

First, reserve the date you want by visiting the ‘Rent the Rock’ sign-up. Then, pay for your reservation through MySchoolBucks.

Have questions? Contact Lindsay Bullock, spirit rock committee manager.
