Information for Shipyard Artists

Shipyard History Talk with Stacey Carter

All artists are invite to attend next Saturday's Shipyard History talk by Stacey Carter in the Shipyard Gallery. In addition to an overview of the general history, she will share her latest findings about how African American shipyard workers were treated and the discrimination they experienced. This history is intimately connected to the history of Bayview Hunters Point.

This is also the last opportunity to see the Building 123 exhibit and Stacey's history exhibit.

Talk is from 2-3PM, followed by Q&A. Gallery open 1-5PM.

Please RSVP for a free artist ticket here, so we know how many chairs to set up and refreshments to provide:

Transparency in Budgeting: We're committed to transparency and are sharing detailed budget reports from The Point and STAR. Despite a slight increase in fees due to rising costs, we're offering early bird discounts and an additional $50 off for those who need it. Please email Barbara for the discount code.

Fees (more details and special ad packages on application page):

Early Bird: $290

Regular: $330

Streamlining Operations: To make the most of our resources, we're focusing on eliminating inefficiencies. Late submissions and changes create significant extra work for Bill and Barbara, so we'll be enforcing deadlines strictly to ensure a smooth process for everyone.

Catalogs: We will produce two catalogs, one for spring and one for fall, as usual. Artists will be listed by building in alphabetical order. Additionally, we're making the entire catalog clickable, reducing the need for printed copies and enhancing early online accessibility.

Advertising Adjustments: We're transitioning to half-page and full-page ads only to maintain a cohesive look in our promotional materials. All artist ads will follow a simple template to ensure uniformity and high quality, making the catalog more appealing to potential buyers. Also eliminating the need for artists to get their ads designed, all we need is a picture of the art you want to display. As an extra benefit for advertisers, we will use the ads for promotion on social media.

Preview Show: I really liked the energy that came from artists creating new work for a show that created some cohesion around a theme in our Building 123 show. In discussions in our Google group, most artists liked the idea of a theme for the preview show, but not one as narrow as to paint a specific aspect of the shipyard. Here is what I came up with based on your comments:

"By Water's Edge: Reflections from the Shipyard"

Inviting artists to explore the relationship between the shipyard and the water that surrounds it, encouraging interpretations of reflection, both literal and metaphorical.

If you really hate it, we can change the theme, but I thought this theme would accommodate all styles, and the water element can be interpreted in many different ways. If you don't like it, please email me with specific objections and alternative ideas in the next few days. Let's have a great preview show!

Note: all art in the preview show will also be featured in our online store. For purchases in person or online, STAR will collect the funds, and retain a 25% commission.

The gallery was packed after the Building 123 ceremony.

40th Anniversary & Fall Open Studios: Looking ahead, we're excited about a significant 40th anniversary celebration in conjunction with Fall Open Studios. With package deals and ultra- early bird offerings we are opening fall registration early. If ArtSpan wants to make the shipyard their last weekend, as was floated in a recent email, and allow artists to choose to participate in both, that would be great. We're also planning special attractions, including potential building illuminations and a celebratory event, to mark this milestone. Your ideas are welcome!

STAR Website as Your Info Hub: For updates and detailed information, please refer to the FOR ARTISTS section on the STAR website. This will help reduce the volume of direct inquiries to Bill and Barbara.

New Signup System: To improve efficiency and reduce costs, we're transitioning from Eventbrite to Jotform for artist sign-ups. Eventbrite will continue to be used for public event registration due to its popularity among attendees.

Extra Promotion: We're delighted to announce a partnership with the SF Symphony, offering us free ad space in their April program and additional exposure at their venue.

Embracing AI: Given the growing interest in AI tools like ChatGPT, I’ll be offering an introductory class in March. This tool can aid in various writing tasks, and I encourage you to explore its capabilities by signing up for a free account at openAI.com now, to stay ahead in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

We're living in a time of rapid technological advancement, and leveraging new tools to enhance our artistic and professional endeavors is crucial.

The actual demolition is scheduled to start on February 26 on the East side of the building, where the contractor will enlarge the entrance to allow for the passage of large vehicles. This first part will be hard to view. Closest viewing area would be from Building 125.
