Dear Families,

Can we talk about the importance of students coming to a school where they are liked? Sometimes we talk about being liked as a “nice to have” but not a necessity. It is my belief that for students to succeed they need to show up to a place that likes having them around. Being liked is a huge part of belonging. For me, this came to life when I had Ms. Newhouse as a 3rd-grade teacher. If you knew me then, I was a hard kid to like. I was squirrely, had a hard time sitting still, and had a short fuse with some pretty raw emotion. For many years I went to school thinking that teachers endured me and I just had to work REALLY HARD to not mess up so I wouldn’t get in trouble. Then Ms. Newhouse entered my life, she laughed at my little jokes, she embraced my need to move, and when she corrected my behavior she got down at my eye level and talked to me the way you talk to someone you really care about. I am pretty sure Ms. Newhouse liked me - and this completely changed the way I felt when I came to school.

Every student deserves to have AT LEAST one adult who really likes them at their school. Some schools call this the “One Caring Adult” connection, meaning that every student deserves to have an adult in the building they can go to and feel an immediate connection. At Jonathan, we spend a lot of time talking about how we create a climate where every student belongs. If a teacher is struggling to connect with a student in their class we have a wonderful “questionnaire” they can use to interview the student and find places and ways to connect. If you find that your student is struggling at school, a great question to ask me is “who is the adult at school who really enjoys my student and how can they spend more time with him/her?” Among all the things we do to teach your children and provide an education - we are also laser-focused on making sure they walk into a building where they are loved, connected, and feel they belong.

Thank you for your partnership, we love having your student at Jonathan Elementary.

Best,

Pete Morse

Improvement to Parent Drop-Off/Pick-up

We continue to look for ways to make our car pickup line safer and more efficient. Will you please print out this PAGEfill in your student's names on it (First name and Last Initial is sufficient) and place it on your dashboard or passenger window when you pull into the car pickup line.

We will load students only when you reach the yellow curbed portion, and by placing this card in your window we can look for your student and get them over to you in a safe and timely manner.

From the Health Office
