DOMAINE JEAN-MARC PILLOT

Bourgogne Blanc 'Les Haut des Champs' 2021

A favorite Burgundy producer of mine, from a parcel on the southeastern end of Chassagne-Montrachet, this wine now passes its élevage in stainless steel tank to preserve its freshness. It shares the broad shoulders and dense texture of the wines of Chassagne. Bottled twelve months after the harvest, this wine establishes the base-line for the clean, linear style which Jean-Marc Pillot is known for in his highly allocated white burgundy.

CHAMPAGNE LAHERTE FRÉRES

The Laherte family has a long history in the region. Founded in 1889 by Jean-Baptiste Laherte, the estate was originally made up of vines primarily in the village of Chavot. Fourth generation vigneron Michel Laherte expanded the family estate which then covered about five hectares. With his wife Cécile, the two young vignerons modernized the press and tanks, but soon realized that too much modernity such as the use of herbicides and pesticides would prevent full terroir expression in the wines. They began working the soils, gently vinifying the juices, and remaining humble and patient as the wines developed. This philosophy is the foundation of the estate and has endured through the generations.

Today, under the direction of Aurélien Laherte who took over in 2005, the estate has become one of the most progressive and dynamic rising stars in the appellation. Like many of Champagne's top practicioners, the estate has begun to produce a series of tiny production, single-vineyard, single vintage cuvees (around 3,000 bottles each) from some of their most unique and expressive biodynamically-farmed parcels. These wines are all vinified in used Burgundy barrels, without malolactic fermentation, and are bottled without fining and filtration. They are then finished with little or no dosage so as to not mask the individuality of the underlying terroirs.

DOMAINE ALAIN CHAVY

Alain Chavy produces restrained, structured, and long-lived white Burgundies from 17 acres of vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet. Alain and his brother Jean-Louis worked with their father from 1986 until his retirement in 1997. The brothers continued to work together until 2003 when they decided to equally divide the 32 acres belonging to Domaine Gérard Chavy. Alain established Domaine Alain Chavy in 2003 and moved to a grand, old house in the village of Puligny-Montrachet, where he lives with his family. Here, Alain constructed a new underground cellar—one of the few in Puligny—where he continues to refine his work in the vineyard and cellar.

DOMAINE DE BEAURENARD

Domaine de Beaurenard has been a family-run estate for eight generations. Today, brothers Daniel & Frédéric Coulon and Daniel’s sons Victor and Antonin are dedicated to produce the most essential expressions of this historic region, long sought-after by discerning collectors and enthusiasts around the globe. Domaine de Beaurenard has been producing certified biodynamic wines on more than 80 acres of this celebrated terroir since 2010. Domaine de Beaurenard is also established in the up and coming Rasteau Appellation with 60 acres and in Côtes du Rhône with 25 acres both also certified biodynamic.

In addition to the timeless Domaine de Beaurenard facilities, the Coulon family is developing a range of certified biodynamic wines made from grapes sourced in friends’ vineyards in the Rhône region. “We have seen great potential to develop and expand our activities, and portfolio while keeping our philosophy and values intact,” says Victor. This promising project called BiotifulFOX is led by the new generation and is expanding the Coulons expertise to exciting new wines.
