PESA’s Summer High School Internship program, coordinated by Elizabeth Sosa and Stephanie Santillan, successfully concluded its 2024 session this week. For five weeks, seven high school students ranging from cities like Bakersfield, Burbank, and South Central Los Angeles participated in a comprehensive program designed to equip them with the skills and resources necessary for success both in school and beyond.
The internship was structured around weekly themes that focused on self-discovery, professional development, and essential life skills. Interns were required to attend meetings twice a week and had access to additional office hours on Fridays, ensuring they received personalized guidance and support.
"The program's primary goal is to foster personal development and growth," said PESA’s Community Representative and Internship Co-Coordinator Elizabeth Sosa. “Whether students choose to pursue a four year college, trade school, or enter the workforce they will gain transferable skills and have a strong resume at the conclusion.”
The program kicked off with an emphasis on self-discovery using an online scientific tool to help students identify careers through an aptitude test. In the second week, students focused on crafting their resumes and were also introduced to the basics of professional communication, including how to write and send a professional email.
During the third week, the interns participated in mock interviews conducted by PESA staff members. Each interview was followed by a detailed score sheet and resume review, providing the interns with constructive feedback to enhance their interviewing skills. Week four concentrated on developing essential computer and office skills, writing professional emails and understanding dress codes. Finally, this week was dedicated to financial literacy, where students learned the basics of budgeting and maintaining financial health.
Suzi, a 10th grader at John Burroughs High School, reflected on her experience: "My favorite part of the internship program was the mock interviews—they significantly improved my conversational skills. I also appreciated the Excel tutorial, as it was something I had never done before. I highly recommend this internship to other students. It’s not overly difficult, but it challenges you to grow both professionally and personally."
Brice, a 12th grader at Bakersfield High School, stated: "Honestly, this internship has been amazing. I've learned so much about how to improve myself, especially when it comes to interviews and developing skills I didn't even know I had. It's really broadened my perspective on the kinds of careers I can pursue in the adult world. This experience has given me a clearer vision of what I can achieve as I grow older."
Upon completion of the internship, each student left with a polished resume, a letter of recommendation, and a Certificate of Completion. Additionally, they became eligible to be considered for a paid internship during the 2024-2025 school year.
