My parents were born in, and grew up in Hayward, California (East Bay Area), an area we would regularly visit during my childhood. Over the years we got to know the area (to a degree) and enjoyed a lot of what The Bay has to offer, including some restaurants my parents frequented such as Casper's, Banchero's, and Val's. Before moving up to Humboldt my Dad practiced a few different martial arts around the Bay Area and made a lot of friends in the process. One of those friends was Mabel Lee, who was a fellow student in his Tai Chi class. Mabel just so happened to study at the Shatin Restaurant in Hong Kong and had a passion for authentic Chinese cuisine. Luckily for my Dad (and me, and maybe even you) Mabel had just printed her first ever cook book, and gave a copy to my Dad. Fast forward 40 years to my Mom cleaning out a spare bedroom closet to find the holy grail of cook books, just sitting there, waiting for its moment of glory. I don't know about you, but I personally think Humboldt does very well for itself when it comes to quality cuisine, with only one glaring exception, Chinese food. I was a pretty big fan of Liu's in Eureka, but unfortunately they closed up shop a few years ago and nothing has quite filled that void since. As you can imagine I was beyond excited to get a copy of this cook book to try and quell the cravings that usually have to wait for the one or two times a year when we can find a place when we're traveling. As you can see in some of the sample pages above, there's dozens of different dishes that satisfy even the most voracious of appetites.
