Paraesophageal hernias can cause significant symptoms and morbidity. Many patients with giant paraesophageal hernias (GPHH) are elderly, thus with an increased risk of complications when undergoing surgical repair compared to the general population. This study compared patients with GPHH who underwent either medical or surgical treatment and sought to assess their outcomes, enrolling prospectively a total of 67 patients over the age of 70. The study found that laparoscopic GPHH repair can be performed safely and advised that advanced age should not be a limiting factor for surgical repair.
