STUDENTS RESTORE DIGNITY WITH UPKEEP OF CEMETERY

On an embankment just yards away from Foothill Road in Bridgewater, marked and weathered gravestones dot a triangular plot of land that serves as the site of the Prince Rodgers Cemetery, a final resting place of former slaves.

Once deemed an abandoned site, the cemetery sat untouched for more than 100 years until its restoration and dedication in 2021. Now, the site is maintained by the Prince Rodgers Foundation, with the seasonal help of Immaculata High School students, who visit the site throughout the year to help upkeep the cemetery grounds.

IMMACULATA GRADUATES 128, $32.5 MILLION AWARDED IN SCHOLARSHIPS

One hundred twenty-eight graduates of the Immaculata High School Class of 2023 received their diplomas during the school’s 57th commencement at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Somerville, on Friday, June 2. The commencement marked the 10,000th graduate to go through the doors of Immaculata, whose first senior class graduated in 1966.

“Immaculata for over 60 years now has been educating young men and women and it’s done a great job. But you (the graduates) certainly have gotten much more than anyone’s gotten in these 60 years because of what you have been through these past few years,” Bishop James F. Checchio said in his opening remarks. “… Life’s full of challenges … and hopefully you’ve learned from dealing with this pandemic a couple of important lessons."

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

Now a graduate of Immaculata High School, Molly Arkoulakis '23, in partnership with the school and the Spartan Spirit 5K Committee, recently raised $2,622 for Civica, a nonprofit organization aiming to combat insulin rationing by manufacturing and distributing affordable insulin. A check in the same amount, a portion of the total race registration fees collected for the Spartan Spirit 5K, was presented to a representative from the organization on June 24, the day of the race.

In speaking to race participants before presenting the check to Civica, Arkoulakis said, "I spent the past year researching type 1 diabetes, as a type 1 diabetic myself, and I learned a lot about insulin rationing and how important insulin is as a basic life necessity."

Arkoulakis, a Marian Scholar and member of the cross country team during her time at Immaculata, completed her AP Capstone project on the dangers of insulin rationing and the critical need to make and distribute affordable insulin.

"Insulin, right now, is the sixth most expensive liquid in the world," she said, adding that the cause, understandably, is very important to her and so many other diabetics who depend on the life-saving medication.

Thank you to all our race sponsors, participants, volunteers, and, of course, our committee, for making this race and this life-saving contribution to Civica possible.
