April 6 Meeting: Guest Artist, Ben Faubion
A Presentation of Work by Ben Faubion, Pad.co Creative Director and Minicrew Artist
Title: Digital Characters and Design
|
Ben Faubion will give a presentation of his illustration work on Minicrew as well as his latest design work. He'll talk about his process of refining a character drawing, inking, and coloring digitally. He will be available to answer questions about digital tool techniques as well as any questions about developing an engaging career in art and design.
Bio
Ben Faubion is both an illustrator and digital designer. He attended Laguna College of Art and Design, and earned a B.F.A in Illustration/Design. He has worked as a UI designer with a variety of fortune 500 companies, design agencies, and startups, while also continuously engaging his love for drawing and characters. His web and app design experience includes clients such Disney, Kawasaki, Ubisoft, Intel, and United Rentals. He's currently the Creative Director at Pad, an Austin based startup that helps owners manage their homes. In his free time he's building a quirky and fun illustrative brand called Minicrew, which is focused on the Do-It-Yourself and Maker culture. You can view his design work at

who sign up. Only 2-d work will be considered as all work needs to hang on the libraries' walls. Pick-up date for the Extended Exhibit will be August 19th, 10 to 12 noon, at the library in which the art has been shown.

Juror - Carter Scaggs
Carter Scaggs
received his BFA in Printmaking from the
University of North Texas and his MFA in Printmaking from Indiana University. He has been teaching at Collin College since 1993. He teaches 2-D Studio courses, including 2-D Design, Figure Drawing I & II, and Printmaking I & II.
Scaggs has exhibited his work in galleries and competitions throughout the U.S. He works with intaglio, relief and drawing processes. His work is decidedly narrative and attempts to document his subjective responses to significant events, figures, and objects. His artwork typically depicts allegorical, symbolic, and narrative scenes through which he hopes to convey the underlying and profound meaning within the world of which we live.

On exhibit now, at the PointBank Black Box Theater, is an exhibition of watercolor and mixed media paintings by the students of Jo Williams. Artists exhibiting are Connie Hamill, Carolyn Johnson, Kimberly Karl, Barbara Lindley, Claudia Lynch, Clint Lynch, Mary Maher, Buster Maloney, Frances May, Diana McGimpsey, Bonnie Merritt, and Susan Vaughan. All exhibitors are members of the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST).
This exhibition will feature a variety of techniques including direct painting with transparent watercolor and experimental painting creating an abstract underpainting with splattering various dry pigments including instant coffee and instant tea. Subjects include florals - sunflowers, poinsettias, and white flowers as a study in painting white, and various birds and animals.
Williams has been painting and teaching in watercolor for over thirty years. Local classes are held at the Patterson-Appleton Art Center. Williams also teaches in various locations including in France for Artistic Gourmet Adventures. She will be teaching in Brittany in June, in Fredericksburg in April, and in Santa Fe in September.

"Through the Ages"
exhibition at the Denton Senior Center
Lorraine Hayes will be exhibiting April through June.
"My art covers a wide range of realism and abstraction. The dual purpose of my art is to appeal to the eye and simultaneously to stimulate the mind. My images originate from my travels and in my home environment. I often work from photographs but do not strive merely to reproduce them. Rather I attempt to distill from the scene the elements that attracted me to record them. I like to change the composition as needed to make it more interesting as a painting.
I employ shape, color, and texture, including collage, to produce a rich surface that attracts the eye and produces the forbidden urge to touch.
Although I studied all the painting mediums I prefer to paint  with watercolor and acrylics. I often thin down the acrylic so they move and merge like watercolor. I also frequently return to printmaking using the collograph and monoprint techniques. There is always a wonderful surprise when pulling a print from the plate after putting it through the etching press!"

Stoke Exhibition is a new Revolving Exhibit in Denton. "Stoke" is located walking distance from the Patterson- Appleton Center at 608 E. Hickory St., Suite 128.
Artists David Blow, Susan K. Boyle and Deanna Wood are exhibiting and their work will be up for 3 months.
David Blow: I am photographer/printmaker and Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of North Texas. I have been engaged as a
printmaker for forty five years and
exhibited my work in numerous national and international exhibitions including 2014 "All Creatures of our God and King" a one person exhibition at Lovers Lane UMC in Dallas,
Texas. In 2013, I had a "Retrospective Exhibition" at the University of North Texas on the Square in Denton.

Susan K. Boyle has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. After graduation she worked as a commercial artist for several years in Kansas City and in New York City. After changing careers Boyle continued studying art while traveling worldwide. Susan says, "Art is my primary creative outlet, so drawing and painting people has always seemed particularly compelling to me."
Boyle has been exhibiting publicly for over seventeen years. Her work may be seen in private collections across America.
About this Art Series:
This series of ten paintings started with models in the studio. Working from life, Susan K Boyle created sensitive line drawings that she enlarged and transferred to canvas. Boyle's goal was to capture the mood and spirit of the individual with a minimum of lines, marks, and colors. Using simplified forms, and limited colors she created this series of thoughtful figurative work of art. Website: susanboyle.com.

Born in Houston in 1966,
Deanna Wood
spent most of her childhood moving around the country with her family, returning to Texas in 1982.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in graphic design, both from Texas Woman's University. She worked as a graphic designer in a corporate environment for 14 years. She decided to leave the corporate world behind to pursue a career in fine art, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Texas Woman's University in 2004. She lives in Denton, Texas and teaches art at Texas Woman's University and encaustic workshops at her studio and The Encaustic Center.

Darla Bostick has three pieces in the exhibit at Huffines Recreation Center in Richardson, March 10 - May 23 and a piece included in the Richardson
Civic Art Society 51st Regional Juried Show at the Eisemann Center, April 26 - May 27.
Bostick has had two pieces accepted in the Tom Peyton Memorial Juried Art Exhibition in Alexandria, LA, which will be held April 28 - May 8. In addition, she will have a watercolor painting hanging at the MCL Grand in Lewisville for the production of "Chickens" May 12 - 28.

FEES: There is a $50 entry fee, which includes entry for 3 pieces, and a one year membership in the Museum. Multiple images may be submitted for one piece.
Biennial: Origins in Geometry is a juried competition to recognize excellence in emerging visual artists deriving inspiration from geometric abstraction.
Artists who are selected as finalists will be featured in an exhibit at the Museum July 28 through October 22, included in a catalog with other finalists, receive exposure on the museum website, and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.
The Museum concentrates on modern and contemporary geometric, constructivist and kinetic art work. It is also the first museum with a concentration on MADI art, which is always non-representational, hard-edged, and comes out of the frame.
ELIGIBILITY:
- The competition is open to all artists working in all mediums.
- Any work of art is acceptable as long as it:
- Incorporates geometric elements either as the basis for exploration, the underlying structure or within the finished work
- Has been made within the last two years
AWARDS: A total of $3000 will be awarded as follows: Best of Show - $1,500; Second Place - $1000; and Third Place - $500.

VAST Artist Day Out is a day where members may come paint at the Arts Center from 9:00am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month. There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering.
You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends. Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!

These are the dates (usually fourth Thursday) for the monthly drawing session with a live model. This two hour open studio at the Arts Center will have no instructor. The group is available to VAST members only.
Each meeting will have both short and long poses. The model will be clothed. Participants will share the cost of the model. All participants will be responsible for putting the room back in order.
There will be no meetings in the summer: June, July, and August.
Location: The craft room at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street.
Because studio space is limited, it will be necessary for interested artists to reserve a space. If you have not yet reserved your space, please contact Susan Boyle at:
