INGATHERING - Sunday, August 21!
One service that almost all UU congregations celebrate is the annual Ingathering. This is usually held at the beginning of a new program year at the end of the summer. Because our schools and colleges now begin in August, we have our Ingathering then. It’s a time of returning after summer vacations, though our congregation has services throughout the year. Some may think of it as a Homecoming - the gathering of souls to be together once again. Our Ingathering service will be held on August 21. This service will be an intergenerational service with lots of opportunities for congregational participation including:
- The calling of directions as we gather the love, spirit, and memories of loved ones who live in those directions as well as those of ancestors;
- The blessing of our babies and other children who have not yet received this special welcoming and naming ritual ceremony;
- The traditional water communion where we pour water symbolizing places we’ve visited or waters we appreciate nearby;
- Words and songs to honor the occasion.
We hope you will come home to UU and renew your fellowship with others who lift up our values. Invite others to come with you. Of course, we will continue to provide our service via Zoom for those unable to be with us in person.
Check out information about our other services and activities in this newsletter!

As Unitarian Universalists, we are constantly at work to be on the right side of issues and on the right side of history. Being socially and religiously progressive has its benefits, but it can also be exhausting. It is vitally important that we tap into our spiritual resources to find strength when we feel emotionally and spiritually drained.

Many, many thanks to all who attended and enjoyed the July 4th picnic. What a success. And as always a heartfelt thanks to Barbara Sprouse who has gathered our energies for some amazing get togethers this year — July picnic and our 25th anniversary celebration. In September, we are launching our annual generosity campaign where we come together and dream of our future and chip in to make it happen with our time, talent and treasure. In honor of Barbara’s many years of leading stewardship we are selecting a theme song discovered by Kim Merck, “Crowded Table”… so we can imagine many wonderful UUCG family gatherings into the future. We are looking for helpers to make this generosity campaign as much fun as a boisterous family dinner around the kitchen table. Contact me at 404-824-5562 to pitch in!
Mark your calendars for our Annual all-congregation meeting on Sunday, December 11.
In beloved community,
Beth Stevenson

High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out
by Amanda Ripley
Simon & Schuster, 2021
"When we are baffled by the insanity of the 'other side'-in our politics, at work, or at home-it's because we aren't seeing how the conflict itself has taken over. High conflict is what happens when discord distills into a good-versus-evil kind of feud, the kind with an us and a them. In this state, the normal rules of engagement no longer apply. The brain behaves differently. We feel increasingly certain of our own superiority and, at the same time, more and more mystified by the other side. Amanda Ripley investigates how good people get captured by high conflict-and how they break free."
We will discuss over two sessions. For the first, read up to page 250.

JULY = YIKES IT’S HOT!
Adding insult to injury, have you noticed the spike in your power bill? Yes, GA Power does hit you harder in the summer. A smart way to protect your budget is through the combined use of fans and AC. You can set the thermostat a bit higher and still stay comfortable by using fans. Here is a link to the best rated fans – you can browse, read the reviews and click a link to order. Remember to keep your AC running at its best by changing filters regularly, and having your system checked twice a year by a professional. FYI: The expensive grade filters make your AC unit work harder – better to use a less expensive filters and change them more often.

Glynn Clergy (& Interfaith Community) for Equity Meeting Thursday, 7/21/22

Kim Merck, Denise Anderson, and Mari Perla attended the Glynn Clergy for Equity Meeting Thursday, 7/21/22. Rabbi Rachel Bergman led the meeting of about 15 people from Union City Church, St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, St. Marks Episcopal Church, and others. All members of area churches who want to join in the equity work of this group are welcome to participate and revisions to the name of the organization were discussed.
The work session included 3 projects:
1. Community Vigil before or after Hate Crimes Sentencing Hearing on 8/8/22 (see below)
2. Equity Dinners (see below for more info on August dinner)
3. Community Seder (scheduled for March 23, 2023). Please contact Mari Perla or Beth Sutton for more information.
