“I do not at all understand the mystery of grace — only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us.”

—Anne Lamott

Dear Friends,

Thank you for the prayers, the well-wishes, and the beautiful flowers shared while I recover from surgery. I am looking forward to being with you in worship on Sunday sporting a stylish black sling. Until my recovery is further along though, other than being in the building on Sundays I will be working from home at a reduced schedule.

I am so grateful to Steve Wall-Smith for preaching and leading worship. What a blessing! Thank you to all of the faithful leaders who always keep worship and all of the life of the church moving forward! I am eager to see the refinished floors in the lower level as well as the reorganized office space. I know tonight’s Community Unity international Dinner will be great!

We will continue with the Freed-2-Lead sermon series this Sunday focusing on Spiritual Gifts--what they are and why God gives them to us. In this newsletter there is a link to an online assessment will help you identify your spiritual gifts and a link that will lead you to find more information about Spiritual Gifts.

When I think about Spiritual gifts, it reminds me of writing thank you notes for wedding gifts. Steve, happened to read a note thanking someone for the trivet as it was on its way to the envelope. He turned to me with a puzzled look on his face and asked “What is a trivet?!”

I knew that a trivet was something you put hot dishes on so they don’t scorch your table or counter, but at the time it was more fun to make something up. I told him that “trivet” is the standard word you use in thank you notes when you don’t really know what to call the gift you received. I came clean shortly after I shared this false information, but for a moment he believed me, probably because there were a few gifts, lovingly given, whose function and purpose required some real thought.

I think this can, and sadly too often does happen, when we identify our spiritual gifts. We can perhaps name them, but we don’t know what to do with them! So, this Sunday we will talk about what we might do with these gifts once we identify them. Not only does the Spirit give us gifts. The Spirit also helps us determine how these gifts and our passions intersect with the world’s needs.

As with last Sunday there will be a bulletin insert with additional resources, but for those of you who prefer to have more time to think, I invite you to consider these questions as Sunday approaches. The questions you will be invited to consider on Sunday have to do with identifying your passions and your perception of the world’s needs:

  • ·     What brings you to life? What is your deep gladness?
  • ·     What breaks your heart when you look at the world?
  • ·     What do you see in the world that makes you angry?
  • ·     What life experiences have you had that could help you address those issues?

The gifts given to us by God through the Holy Spirit are not “trivets” or trivial. They are given to you for fulfilling a purpose that is important to God. I hope you will take time to think about these questions and take part in worship either in-person or online. I look forward to worshiping with you and discovering with you on Sunday.

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

Learning More About Spiritual Gifts

Our current sermon series, “Freed 2 Lead”, was developed by the Missouri Annual Conference. As a part of this series, we will be talking about spiritual gifts. These gifts are given to us through the Holy Spirit for doing God’s ministry in the world and are different than our talents and skills. Spiritual gifts will be the topic of our January 21 sermon. If you are excited to learn more about Spiritual gifts, visit this web page: https://www.umcdiscipleship.org/equipping-leaders/spiritual-gifts.

If you are eager to find out what your spiritual gifts are, take the Spiritual Gifts Inventory through this web page. https://www.umcdiscipleship.org/spiritual-gifts-inventory/en

What do I do if I am fearful to move forward or doubt my abilities?

Fear and self-doubt are a part of humanity. If you are interested in concrete steps to take to overcome fear and self-doubt, watch this 16 minute YouTube video clip,“Brene’ Brown’s, Power of Showing Up: Overcoming Self Doubt and Criticism”, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dCgZhMFJSk.

Resource for Sunday, January 14

On Sunday, January 14, the second Sunday in the Freed-2-Leader sermon series, Rev Steve Wall-Smith’s preached a wonderful message based on Acts 9: 10 – 20 which tells the story of Ananias, a disciple of Jesus, being called by God to go to Paul, who at that time was known for persecuting Christians. We were blessed by his ability to make us laugh several times as we faced the issue of fear, including the fear of failure.

Those of you who were able to attend in-person worship would have found this additional resource in the bulletin insert. If you worshiped online or were unable attend worship, the resource is included below. The first part addresses those questions we might have about listening for God’s direction. Just like Ananias was uncertain that God was calling him to visit and lay hands on the Paul, a known enemy, we can question whether or not we are really hearing what God says to us.

The second section provides an additional resource for dealing with fear and self-doubt.

We listen to God through prayer, scripture reading and worship.

  • What spiritual practices help you listen to God?
  • How have you felt God prompting you to action?
  • Where is God telling you to go?
  •  Some tools for discernment include:

o  Is this action consistent with your understanding of Jesus’ teachings?

o  Is this action consistent with the gifts God has provided you?

o  Does this action involve serving God and serving others?

If we are listening and willing, God will lead us!

Learning opportunity with Community Unity Steering team led by LIfewiseStL Urban Forum Team

The Community Unity Steering Team is inviting MUMC church leadership to join them in a series of learning experiences led by the Lifewise STL Urban Forum Team. These classes will help inform our next steps forward. Classes will have an emphasis on the impact of race and the information presented will be tailored to fit the needs of the MRH school district area. This will be an eye opening experience for many of us to step into the shoes of those who are in need of additional support. Hopefully, these classes will help us to learn what kind of support families need.

To our Mumc Church family-

Thank you for the generous gift of the Visa gift card. It was an unexpected gift and will go a long way with diapers!

Words will never be able to express our gratitude for the prayers and support you have showered us as we began our journey to expand our family. We thank God everyday for our sweet Lorelai and we let her know how loved she is- by God, by us, by her church family and beyond.

We can't wait to introduce her to everyone in 2024!
