A Strong Sense of Duty!

by Michael Hyland, Executive Director

Last week most people enjoyed the “unofficial end of summer” holiday known as Labor Day. Like most, I enjoyed a long weekend with family relaxing close to home. This three-day holiday weekend marks different things to different people.

For some, it’s the return to school. Whether it’s the week prior to Labor Day or the week after, Labor Day weekend is a stark reminder to students that the summer is over and its time to hit the books. For football fans, it’s a sign that weekends will now be filled with kick-offs, touchdowns, and tailgates.

But whether you like the change in the weather and anticipating the colorful leaves, or the opportunity to drink Pumpkin Spiced Lattes from Dunkin’, Labor Day is a special weekend – one that doesn’t get enough credit when compared to holidays such as Christmas, Easter or New Year’s Day. I’m not sure what your family traditions are back home, by my Labor Day holiday never involved receiving presents from the mysterious St. Nick, eating candy from a rabbit, or staying up all night to watch a ball drop while I bang pots and pans.

Labor Day is more reverent. Its more reflective. My father always relaxed over the Labor Day weekend. I’m also certain that the term ‘relaxing’ for a working man with seven sons wasn’t as easy as it appeared through my eyes. I’d guess that ‘relaxing’ in his context was being thankful and a good reminder of his devotion to his family, his church, and his community. My father was born in 1920, had polio, and lived through such events as the great depression and WW II. The fact that he could get married at 36 years old, have 7 boys and provide food and a home was an accomplishment to be proud of for any man. But still, his commitment to serving the community never wavered.

I was sad to see the passing of Queen Elizabeth II this past week. I am not a Royal Family follower, probably because like you, my life is busy enough these days. However, I was struck by a line in her obituary.

“A strong sense of duty and her determination to dedicate her life to her people.”
Strong words. Words to live by. I never met QE II, but I’m sure she would have done well in Public Power. Servants to the community.
