SELECT Education Class Fees Can Be Paid By ETF

About the Employment & Training Fund. In 1991, the State Legislature established the ETF program to address the growing need to upgrade the job skills of Hawaii's workforce, created as part of a national movement that swept the country in the 1980s. Investing in human capital to improve productivity and the nation's quality of goods and services became a top priority. The Employer Referral ("micro") program is for individual businesses that need to upgrade the job skills of their employees.

BIA Hawaii is an approved Training Provider. ETF will cover 50% of the Non-Member course fee rate for select courses, up to a maximum of $400.

UPCOMING COURSES
Develop the skills you need for success on or off-site production operations management. This hands-on course covers the three phases of a successful venture, planning, implementation and evaluation. Owners, project managers, superintendents, sales managers and anyone involved in the pre-construction and construction process will benefit from this introductory course.

After completion of this course, you will be able to:
  1. Explain the basics of successful project management
  2. Execute the pre-construction project management functions and responsibilities.
  3. Implement the tools available for efficient project management
  4. Manage trade contractors effectively
  5. Perform project management duties during the period
  6. Complete the duties and responsibilities of post-project management
The ability to prepare effectively for a project is vital to the success of any business. Project preparation consists of multiple processes that work together and, when performed effectively, enable you to increase your efficiency, achieve greater client satisfaction, enhance team and vendor relationships and protect profitability. This course provides you with the knowledge of skills to perform two of the critical processes in project preparation: estimating costs and creating the schedule to complete the project.

As a graduate of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Illustrate how estimating and scheduling work together to effectively set up the project
  2. Identify the fundamentals of estimating to identify the costs (not the selling price)
  3. Use spreadsheets and packaged estimating systems
  4. Identify the fundamentals of scheduling
  5. Illustrate the schedule as a key communication tool

Hawaiian Electric launches new pilot program
to help commercial customers significantly reduce the upfront cost
of installing electric vehicle charging equipment
The pilot, dubbed Charge Up Commercial, is aimed at properties such as shopping centers, office buildings, fleet facilities, condominiums and apartments located on Oahu, Hawaii Island or in Maui County. Under the pilot Hawaiian Electric will pay for and install equipment, such as transformers and electric panels to support customer-owned charging stations.

The infrastructure associated with EV charging typically represents a sizeable investment that can be cost prohibitive for some customers. Charge Up Commercial helps bridge that gap by minimizing the cost and complexity of installing charging infrastructure.

“We’re excited to provide our commercial customers the opportunity to get ahead of the curve on installation of electric vehicle charging equipment,” said Aki Marceau, Hawaiian Electric’s director of electrification of transportation. “With most major vehicle manufacturers announcing plans to transition a large share of their products to electric over the next decade this is a good time to take action to meet growing demand for EV charging,” she said.

Hawaiian Electric traditionally provides electric service up to the utility side of the meter, while customers are responsible for designing, procuring, installing, and maintaining equipment on their side of the meter. Through Charge Up Commercial Hawaiian Electric will also provide infrastructure on the customer side of the meter, from the meter socket up to an agreeable point of interconnection with the charging equipment.

Make-ready infrastructure will typically include a transformer upgrade and, if necessary, service drop, meter panel or socket, circuit panel, conduit and wires up to the point of the first interconnection with customer-procured charging equipment. Participants are responsible for the selection, purchase and installation of EV charging equipment that meets Hawaiian Electric’s technical requirements.

Hawaiian Electric will install the make-ready equipment to support the installation of four to six Level 2 charging ports.

Charge Up Commercial complements Hawaiian Electric’s new commercial EV charging rates that reduce the cost for commercial customers who provide EV charging services. The five-year pilot program employs a time-of-use rate structure that incentivizes charging during midday hours when there is an abundance of solar energy flowing into the grid.

The new rates benefit medium-sized commercial customers under Schedule EV-J and large commercial customers under Schedule EV-P. The new EV-J and EV-P rates also offer demand charges that are much lower than the existing rates for those customer groups. Because managing demand charges can be an issue for site hosts, keeping the charges low will help mitigate those concerns and encourage the installation of charging stations at public and workplace locations.
