Ready for your fall planting? | |
FROM TUCSON WATER:
Soil Prep & Planting for Fall
It’s time to prepare the soil and get new plants in the ground. Here are 5 tips to get started:
1 - Know your soil type. Go to tucsonaz.gov/water/landscape and click on Water by the Weather – Landscaping Guidelines for a simple test to find out your soil type. This will inform whether you need to improve the soil for the plants you want.
2 - Till and aerate soil. Remove unwanted rocks, weeds, and debris and allow oxygen to get mixed back into the soil. Avoid compacting soil - it can prevent the adequate exchange of air and water to reach plant roots.
3 - Add organic matter. Purchase matter or create compost that will nurture soil and plants. Leaves, branches, manure, and earthworms will naturally enrich our desert soil. Most desert plants and tress do not need amendments to thrive.
4 - Dig a planting hole, sized for the shrub or tree to be planted. Holes should be no deeper than the root ball and 2-3x as wide, which stabilizes the plant and helps absorb water and nutrients.
5 - Add a mulch cover on top of the soil. Mulch acts as a barrier that suppresses weed growth, serves as insulation, and helps to reduce evaporation and retain water.
Now you’re ready to select plants: Consider the plants you want plus the area’s shade and sun, existing irrigation, and microclimates. Go to amwua.org/plants/search to use an easy plant search tool, allowing you to filter by plant type, size, color, sun/shade, flower season, and water use. Please make plants and trees that are desert-adapted and water efficient a priority.

Jefferson Park History Lesson
The streets of Jefferson Park
| |
In 1905, Jefferson Park homesteader, Anna Lester recorded four street names with the Pima County Recorder's Office. One was Lester Street, named for herself and her family, and the other three - Seneca, Linden and Waverly - were named for trees she knew from her native Germany.
SENECA STREET
The Seneca tree is a variety of the species Siebold viburnum. The species was named for Philipp Franz von Siebold of Germany, who gained prominence for his study of Japanese plant and animal life The tree is small and multi-trunked with dark green leaves. It is native to Japan. Because they're small, Senecas are often placed in medians or buffer strips around parking lots
LINDEN STREET
The Linden tree comes in several species. The little-leaf Linden (Tilia cordata) is common in Germany, where Anna Lester was born. During the 1600s and early 1700s, the tree was frequently used to form streets in Europe, with trees lining both sides of a path. A well-known example is Unter den Linden Boulevard in Berlin. The tree grows 40 to 50 feet tall and has sweet-smelling yellow flowers that bloom in the summer.
WAVERLY STREET
Waverly is another name for the quaking aspen. There are two species: Populus tremuloides, native to North America, and Populus tremula, native to Europe and Asia. Because Populus tremula is common in Lester's homeland of Germany, the street is probably named after it. It grows 49 to 65 feet high, and its leaves turn yellow in autumn.
Anna Lester also is believed to have given other Tucson streets their tree names. Among them: Elm Street, Walnut Street (now Cherry Avenue), Pine Avenue (now Warren Avenue), Maple Avenue (now Martin Avenue) and Oak Street (now Campbell Avenue).

|
SPEEDWAY- In 1896, it was a dirt road named Wilson Street. Wilson Street ran from the present-day Mountain Avenue to Park Avenue, At the turn of the century, Wilson Street was changed to Feldman Street, in honor of Alther Marcus Feldman, an immigrant from Eastern Europe who had arrived in Tucson in 1878. He was involved in the photography business as well as land development. In February 1903, developer Andrew Olsen recorded his subdivision, Olsen's Addition and named his section Feldman Street, from present-day Campbell Avenue to Tucson Boulevard, as Jefferson Street. He also named Olsen Avenue. In October 1904, Nate Plumer and Fred J. Steward of the real estate firm. Plumer & Steward recorded their subdivision, calling Feldman-Jefferson Street.
|
“The Speedway”-- Plumer would later race cars down this dirt road. “The Speedway”, also known as The Harlem River Speedway, was a dirt road in New York City that was built in 1898 A couple of years later, in February 1906, the street was listed simply as Speedway Boulevard. Barney Oldfield was said to have raced there.

Lend A Hand Senior Assistance, PO Box 41323, T/A 85717-1323
Lend A Hand (LAH) provides free services to elderly and disabled residents in 12 neighborhoods in the center of the city. Our neighborhood is one that is served by LAH and supports LAH. The services are offered to help these seniors stay in their homes.
LAH runs on volunteer help and we always need more. Our greatest need is drivers. If you could drive someone just once a week or every other week to a medical appointment or shopping trip, that would be a huge help. Drivers can get reimbursement for their mileage. Drivers choose the times they can drive and it is completely flexible – you choose when you want to drive. You get to know people who have lived interesting lives and are so grateful for any help you give them.
We also deliver fresh produce to seniors, do simple home repairs and renovations and hold monthly social activity – meals, trips, entertainment, social connections and exercise classes.
