The Children of Pere Lachaise
In 1804, Paris opened a cemetery that presented a new concept: burial in an Elysian field in the countryside rather than in a cramped parish churchyard. The idea was slow to catch on, but in time it came to influence new rural cemeteries in London, Boston and New York. Compare its history with that of Mount Auburn Cemetery (1831) in Cambridge, MA, that helped to launch the rural cemetery movement.
