Building Industry Seeks Extension
for Vacant Homes Tax in Toronto
| |
Oakville and Halton continue to develop Vacant Homes Tax policy | |
Toronto region homebuilders are asking the city to extend the time they have to start paying the new vacant home tax on unsold housing units, a recent Star article suggests.
This comes after a Statistics Canada report found that 20.2 per cent of owners are investors.
Toronto's vacant home tax applies to condos or other homes that are owned by the developer if they have been vacant for more than six months in 2022 and are within the residential tax class, said Casey Brendon, director of Revenue Services with the City of Toronto.
On April 20, 2022 Halton Regional Council unanimously approved the Vacant Homes Tax staff report.
Based on water usage data, Ernst and Young estimates that 4,700 homes in the Halton Region sit vacant.
It also projects that over a 10-year period, the tax would encourage owners of 330 vacant homes to sell or rent their properties.
"Oakville is working with Halton Region as we develop a vacant homes tax. The Town is gathering Oakville and Halton statistics and will share the results with the public." - Mayor Rob Burton
