Celebrating Clean Water: Reflections on 40 Years in the Water Industry

Growing up along the Merrimack River in Bedford, New Hampshire, NEIWPCC Commissioner Fred McNeill recalls catching large bass with abnormal orange eyes - a result of years of water pollution. In this new video, McNeill shares his 40-year water industry career journey that brought him back to the banks of the Merrimack River, where he now manages northern New England's largest wastewater treatment facility.

Call for Abstracts: Nonpoint Source Conference

NEIWPCC is now inviting abstracts for the 33rd Annual Nonpoint Source (NPS) Conference, to be held April 12-13, 2023 in Saratoga Springs, New York. NEIWPCC is coordinating the conference in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with support from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and the Shinnecock Nation.

The EPA launched a new Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights to position the agency to better advance environmental justice, enforce civil rights laws in overburdened communities, and deliver new grants and technical assistance.


The 2022 Long Island South Shore Estuary Reserve Comprehensive Management Plan update has been released. The plan focuses on climate change, resiliency, water quality, habitat restoration and public use of the estuary.


The Lake Champlain Basin Program seeks pre-proposals for research projects that will improve understanding of water and ecosystem resources in the basin and guide effective management.

 

The states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont are among those awarded Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for water infrastructure improvements.


Challenges facing the water and wastewater industries in Massachusetts and beyond are spotlighted in a recent WBUR article.


The Lake Champlain Basin Program seeks proposals to implement practices to reduce phosphorus losses from farm soils in the New York portion of the basin in 2023. Up to $25,000 is available to support the program.


The EPA announced action to control currently unregulated stormwater pollution from entering unchecked into three Boston-area watersheds: the Charles, Mystic and Neponset Rivers.


Construction has started on a $1.3 million flood resiliency project in the town of Newfane, New York.


The EPA’s Southeast New England Program (SNEP) was awarded $1.15 million of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding to Barnstable County, Massachusetts to reduce nitrogen entering Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay waterways.

During a recent quality assurance field assessment, staff visited the Lamoille River in Vermont as part of the Lake Champlain high-frequency monitoring program. Here, staff perform routine inspection, cleaning, and sensor calibration of the water quality sonde. The sonde collects specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbity, nitrate and pH data.

Accolades and Accomplishments


Eric Howe, NEIWPCC program director with the Lake Champlain Basin Program and Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, discusses concerns about the round goby, an invasive fish, entering Lake Champlain during an interview with Mountain Lake Journal PBS.


Commissioner Brian Kavanah and former NEIWPCC employee Leeann Hanson were named a Maine “Clean Water Champion” by the Natural Resources Council of Maine.
