Xcel Energy's Sherco Unit 2 to close on January 1

Xcel Energy will close Unit 2 at the Sherburne County coal plant on January 1, marking a significant step in its ongoing energy transition. This 45-year-old facility has generated power for approximately 1.5 million homes. The closure is part of Xcel's broader strategy to achieve a 70% carbon-free grid, emphasizing nuclear and wind energy integration. DOE finalizes guidance for electric transmission corridor designation process

The U.S. Department of Energy's Grid Deployment Office has released final guidance for the National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC) designation process. This initiative aims to identify specific areas in the country requiring urgent transmission development, collaborating with states, tribes, communities, and industry to accelerate projects. The process, authorized by the Federal Power Act, prioritizes areas where consumers suffer due to insufficient power lines.

The guidance outlines a four-phase process, utilizing findings from the National Transmission Needs Study and public input to pinpoint NIETCs. Designation unlocks federal financing and permitting tools, promoting transmission deployment without specifying a particular project. The public is invited to submit information until February 2, 2024, facilitating a collaborative approach to enhance national grid reliability and reduce consumer costs.
