Sharing Our Expertise

With the Field

CEPP staff love attending and presenting at national conferences. It gives us the opportunity to showcase our expertise, connect with other leaders in the field, and learn new ideas for how to make our system more fair, just, and effective. Recently, we attended the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) Training Institute and the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA) Annual Conference and Training Institute.

CEPP at APPA

Last month, our team converged in New York City to promote the new Community Supervision Resource Center (CSRC) at APPA’s 48th Annual Training Institute. We hosted a roundtable with the Bureau of Justice Assistance to introduce the CSRC to the field and engage in a productive discussion with parole and probation practitioners about recruitment and retention challenges and successes.

Our team also conducted a workshop focused on the importance of analyzing racial and ethnic disparities. Attendees shared their experiences collecting relevant data and taking steps to minimize disparities.

CEPP at NAPSA

CEPP’s Advancing Pretrial Policy and Research (APPR) team blanketed NAPSA’s 2023 Annual Conference and Training Institute in New Orleans! We hosted several workshops on domestic and intimate partner violence, implementing sustainable pretrial change, and racial equity. APPR also sponsored an information table, and CEPP staff participated in several other workshops and plenary sessions.

The highlight was moderating a plenary conversation with directly impacted people who serve as advisors on CEPP and APPR projects. Through genuine and heartfelt conversation, the group discussed why it is important for people with lived experience to serve on policy teams and the value and expertise they contribute to the pretrial improvement process. The panelists were Brandon Brown, Christopher Rashad Green, and Kristie Puckett
