HB7 Passed in First Committee
Dear friends,
Sadly, HB7 was passed today in the House Health & Human Services Committee by a vote of 7 to 3.
This house bill will ban sanctuaries for the unborn in New Mexico cities; strip municipalities of the right to restrict access to abortion and gender changing surgeries; create legal enforcement mechanisms that will make moral objectors vulnerable to civil suits; and spread unrestricted access to these services across the state.
What's Next?
The bill will now be reviewed in the House Judiciary Committee. It is here that we pray the broad language of the bill will be recognized as over reaching and dangerous for New Mexico. Be on alert for your opportunity to voice your concerns to the Judiciary Committee members.
Honorable Mentions
Although it was a great disappointment to see this bill move forward, we are thankful for the representatives who stood in opposition to it. With meticulous scrutiny of the bill, Rep. Jennifer Jones, Rep. Stefani Lord, and Rep. Harlan Vincent stood firmly against the proposed legislation.
Be encouraged!
Thank you to all who voiced your concerns to committee members. It was stated multiple times throughout the hearing that legislators had received thousands of messages asking them to oppose the bill. We must keep at it.
We knew the mountain ahead would be difficult, but that is no reason to stop climbing. Thank you for climbing with us!
