The Ascent of UC's Research Enterprise:
UC Research Awards up $47m in FY22
The University of Cincinnati research community secured $268.3 million in sponsored funding in fiscal year 2021-2022. This record-setting figure reflects the continued impact of UC research locally and around the globe. The total represents a $46.7 million increase over the previous year and a $100+ million leap in awards since fiscal year 2017-2018.

“The upward climb of our research enterprise is a result of talented faculty who are taking big swings when it comes to innovation and discovery,” said UC President Neville G. Pinto. “The impact of UC’s ascent is felt far beyond our campus. Record research at UC translates to foundational advances for our society.”

Solving Problems that Matter
Diego Cuadros, PhD
Associate Professor of Geography
Digital Futures Digital Epidemiology Lab

Diego Cuadros, PhD, Associate Professor of Geography, has been awarded a 2022 National Institute of Mental Health Grant for the project, “Can mental health services break the cycle perpetuating HIV hotspots in sub-Saharan Africa?” in collaboration with researchers from New York University School of Medicine, Strathmore University, StrongMinds, Kenya Ministry of Health, Zambia Ministry of Health, and Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia. Many people living with HIV also suffer from common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, which can interfere with adherence to treatment and correlate with involvement in risky sexual behaviors. The research team hypothesizes that screening and treating such common mental disorders can help highly endemic regions in sub-Saharan Africa get closer to their goal of achieving epidemic control (<0.1% annual rate of new infections). They will use mathematical modeling to predict and classify hotspots and determine the optimal role of mental health services for each type of hotspot. By working with local experts in Kenya and Zambia, the team will strive to ensure that the cost of the customized HIV response is justified by the benefits.

Chayanika Devi
1st year PhD candidate, Geography
Digital Futures Student Fellow, Digital Epidemiology Laboratory
On World Kindness Day (November 13), the UC Graduate College, CAPS, and the Student Wellness Center honored Chayanika Devi with the Third Place Graduate College Kindness Champion Award for her exemplary kindness and impact on the UC graduate school community. For Chayanika, the gratitude and compassion she shares with everyone reflects and fuels her inner joy. By being kind, she’s found that it inspires others to be kind as well. Chayanika’s example illustrates that it is especially important in the midst of the stress of graduate school to be kind to others as well as ourselves in order to “create a culture of kindness and an attitude of gratitude” at UC and in the world.
