President's Message

Happy Fall Y’all!

I want to start by thanking our Golf Tournament sponsors, donors, players, volunteers, and committee members! We had a great tournament! Even though it was “fry-an-egg-on-the-pavement” hot, everyone seemed to have a great time. Congratulations to our Flight, Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, and raffle winners! Thanks to your generous donations, we raised over $26K for our Foundation and Scholarship Funds!!! This money will be used to provide scholarships to girls who are pursuing careers in transportation, and to support our Chapter’s Mentoring, Transportation YOU and Professional Development Programs throughout the year.

We have several opportunities over the next few months to engage with fellow WTS members. Our Lagers & Leadership Program, featuring Marcella Wiebke, PE, is next Wednesday, September 27 at Beard Science Sour House in The Colony. This event is open to members and provides small group mentoring and development opportunities in a more intimate setting. Teaser Alert: our Fall Professional Development Program with Dr. Daniele Lyman-Torres is planned for October 19. Mark your calendar now and watch your inbox for information about both of these events. Coming up in November, we will be hosting our Corporate Partner Reception as a way to show our appreciation to all of our Corporate Partners and the support they provide.

Our UTA WTS Student Chapter has started out the school year strong! The Student Chapter Leadership Team is planning on attending the UTA Student Organization Fair on September 27 and October 15. This fair is a great way to showcase what our Student Chapter has been up to and share opportunities for involvement.

Remember, as a member of WTS, you have access to many great programs and events throughout WTS International. Whether you are traveling for work or pleasure or looking for a virtual event, WTS provides a global network of transportation subject matter experts and opportunities to participate in worldwide events and activities. Feel free to check out some of these events below or at wtsinternational.org.

I hope to see all of you at one of our upcoming events. As always, remember to stay safe, take care of yourself and respect each other. And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

The WTS Distinguished Speaker Series Presents:

Veronica O. Davis, PE

The WTS International 2023 Distinguished Speaker Series highlights the voices of top-level experts, speakers, authors, and academics discussing topics crucial to equity, diversity, and access in transportation.

Join us for our fourth installment of the series on October 19th, 2023 to hear from Veronica O. Davis, PE — engineer, transportation expert, author, and WTS International's 2023 Rosa Parks Diversity Award recipient.

Ms. Davis is the author of Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities, which shines a light on the inequitable and destructive practices of transportation planning and engineering and calls for new thinking and more diverse leadership to create transportation networks which connect people to jobs, education, opportunities, and to each other.

A self-described "transportation nerd," Davis holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park and master's degree in engineering management from Cornell University. In 2009, she co-founded Nspiregreen, LLC, a planning firm dedicated to managing major transportation sectors and functions such as transportation planning, transit-oriented development, master planning, policy development, and long-range planning, and more. In 2012, she was recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House for her professional accomplishments and community advocacy, which includes co-founding Black Women Bike.

Today, Davis is the Director of Transportation & Drainage Operations at the City of Houston Public Works, where she oversees 900 employees, 15,000 lane miles, and over 1 million traffic lights. She is responsible for maintaining and improving the infrastructure that spans all 671 square miles of Houston, Texas, which includes, among other plans, the implementation of new projects designed to increase safety of bike lanes and sidewalks for school-going children and people with disabilities.

Don't miss out on Ms. Davis' thoughts on the importance of diversity and representation in the future of the workforce and transportation policies â€” register now.
