Stanford Medicine-led study finds way to predict which of our organs will fail first
A new study led by Stanford Medicine scientists demonstrates a simple way of studying organ aging by analyzing distinct proteins, or sets of them, in blood, enabling the prediction of individuals’ risk for diseases.
December 6, 2023 - By Bruce Goldman
A study of 5,678 people, led by Stanford Medicine investigators, has shown that our organs age at different rates — and when an organ’s age is especially advanced in comparison with its counterpart in other people of the same age, the person carrying it is at heightened risk both for diseases associated with that organ and for dying.
According to the study, about 1 in every 5 reasonably healthy adults 50 or older is walking around with at least one organ aging at a strongly accelerated rate.

Tissues Everywhere: Managing a Runny Nose
Also known as nonallergic rhinitis, here are some tips on how to slow the flow
By Sheryl Stillman -December 6, 2023
This condition is so popular it has numerous names; here are just three: nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), vasomotor rhinitis, and geriatric rhinitis which affects 17-19 million people in the United States, 70% of women aged 50-64.
"The composition of our nasal tissues, specifically the lining or mucosa of the nose, changes around the age of 60. These changes include thinning of the mucosa, general decrease in the water content of the mucus, degeneration of the mucous secreting glands, and decrease in nasal blood flow," according to Marianella Paz-Lansberg, MD, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine.
"The most common manifestation we see patients present is a chronic clear discharge from the nose," she said. However, other symptoms may include pressure or discomfort in the sinuses. Shah added that with individuals staying active and exercising later in life, rhinitis also increases in older patients, which means inflammation and swelling in nasal tissues.
How to Stop the Leaking
"I often recommend patients first try hydrating the mucous of the nose to make it thinner and less viscous," Paz-Lansberg said. There are several ways to accomplish this, with one dating back centuries. The neti pot, which translates to "nasal cleansing," originated in India thousands of years ago and is an easy and inexpensive way to hydrate and remove unwanted debris.
Another natural option includes a homemade saline solution, saline gel or saline spray, and according to Paz-Lansberg, these can be "fantastic" to use even if you don't have a nasal condition.

SOFO HoHo Another Great Year! | |
SOFO had another successful HoHo toy drive this year. We were able to provide over 250 toys to our local elementary schools along the Forest Drive corridor to make Christmas a little brighter for those less fortunate in our community.
Especially fun was the North Pole that they created at Tyler Heights complete with an area for kids to choose the gifts they wanted.
HUGE thank you to all of your contributions and generosity in making this possible again this year!

Holiday Lights Recycling at Mom's Organic Market through Jan 31st
Give your old holiday lights a new life! Don't toss those broken or unwanted lights into the trash—drop them in electronics recycling at any Anne Arundel County Recycling Centers or bring them to any MOMs Organic Market, and they'll ensure they are responsibly recycled. Together, let's make our holiday season eco-friendly and bright.
WHY RECYCLE YOUR BROKEN HOLIDAY LIGHTS?
- Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday period than any other time of year. The extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage!
- Lights strands contain metals that can be recovered for future uses.
- By dismantling and providing reuse possibilities, intact natural resources are conserved and air and water pollution caused by hazardous disposal is avoided.
- Recycling reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the manufacturing of new products!
FAQ
WHAT IS ACCEPTED?
All holiday lights, working or not-working.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE LIGHTS?
A Better Way Recycling collects all lights and then breaks them down through smelting or shredding to recover raw materials. These raw materials are then used to create roofing and construction materials, piping, car batteries, other electronics, lead wheel weights, flatware, jewelry, and more!
