To the friends and family of Metaphrasis,

Happy Thanksgiving from the bottom of our hearts. This season is best for slowing down and reflecting on all of the happenings of the past year. The holiday season is a time for connecting with others; this sentiment resonates with us deeply. Connection makes us human, and a difference in language should not be a barrier; it should be a bridge. Language access is a matter of showing those around us that we respect and care about what they have to say. We’re grateful to have a hand in creating this level of connection between others.

We’re feeling incredibly thankful for everyone who sees the value in our language services. It is so important to us that everybody feels heard and understood. We’re also thankful to all our wonderful clients and incredible interpreters who continue to value in-person, quality interpreting and understand its value and importance. Translation technologies can never compare to the humanity of communicating across languages and between people.

We often receive stories from organizations we serve informing us they are grateful for the work our interpreters provide. Feeling understood in stressful environments like at the doctor’s office or a government building brings relief to so many people. We also want to thank those who honor the need for a bridge between languages; giving a voice to those who would otherwise be silenced! We’ve highlighted many of these testimonial stories on our website.

On a different note, Saturday, November 26th is Small Business Saturday. Metaphrasis is more than proud to be a small business! We believe small businesses are the backbone of a strong community and economy. Small businesses are also leading job creators in America. Saturday is one of the best days to celebrate the vital role of small businesses in our country and in our lives.

IAMHP CONFERENCE

It was great representing Metaphrasis at the IAMHP conference which brings together Medicaid Providers, Managed Care Organizations, State Legislators, and Business Vendors to actively discuss ways to bring value to Medicaid members across the state. This year's conference highlighted the work of the MCOs to prioritize equity by addressing social determinants of health. The conference created a space for individuals to look toward the future in hopes of continuing to transform healthcare together. Thank you to the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans for allowing us to participate in such a great event.

Translation focuses on written content such as documents, websites, prints, video subtitles, and more. Translators interpret the meaning of written content from a source language into a language that is targeted. For example, translating a written text from Spanish (source) to English (target).

Interpretation focuses on oral communication. It is a service that happens in the moment and is delivered live with no help from scripts, dictionaries, or other reference materials. An interpreter's only relys on experience, a good memory, and quick reflexes.

There are two kinds of interpretation: consecutive and simultaneous. In consecutive translation, the speaker pauses for the interpreter to translate. Simultaneous translation is continuous, the interpreter speaks at the same time as the speaker, requiring equipment (microphone, headphones).
