Pre-Service Teachers Receive Grounding in Sustainability from CELF

With support from the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies, CELF is bringing education for sustainability to pre-service teachers studying education at the University of Houston - Clear Lake.

For the next two years, CELf will support four groups of UHCL teachers-in-training as they apply what they've learned, in the classroom and in outdoor learning spaces along the Gulf Coast.

These scholars will gain experience applying CELF's Civic Science: Inquiry to Action framework within interdisciplinary, community-based student action projects that build students’ skills in systems thinking, data literacy, problem-solving, and place-based storytelling.

"I'm excited to partner with CELF to give students in our UCHLTeach program the opportunity to connect Civic Science to Math and Science lessons, while incorporating the 5E model. Students can teach through inquiry and increase opportunities in their lessons to integrate community and place-based education in STEM."

Sponsor Spotlight: Port Houston

With direct support from Port Houston, CELF is recruiting Career and Technical Education high school educators from schools serving Environmental Justice populations in the vicinity of the Houston Ship Channel.

The program focuses on magnet high schools with maritime CTE programs that can benefit from supplemental Civic Science programming and workforce skill development. Educator project plans will be designed to engage their students in using GIS tools to map their communities and additional technologies to collect and analyze data on key environmental indicators, such as air and water quality.
