Good News!
Four Short Stories
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

We’re Rejoicing!
Thanks to the generosity of many individuals, organizations, and businesses, this year’s Winner$ for Dinners, A Race Against Hunger raised more than $50,000, after expenses, to help us continue to grow Living Stones! This will enable us to keep our Community Health Worker; begin serving Sunday meals at two new locations, the first one this month in Overbrook, the second in Brentwood in January; and, as needs and opportunities arise, offer additional meals, programs, and services such as our most recent addition, My Monday Thing!. We are profoundly grateful to God and to everyone who contributed so generously – and so cheerfully. As scripture says, "… God loves a cheerful giver,” and so do we! Together, we have glorified Him and look forward to doing so again when this popular event returns on September 16, 2023! It’s just hard not to be cheerful at an event that’s so much fun and provides such a great opportunity to share some of all that we have with those who have so little. We hope to see you next September 16!

We’re Simplifying!
After careful consideration, our Board of Directors has determined that GROW Living Stones will return to its roots and once again be known simply as Living Stones. Legally, we’ve always been Living Stones, with the official name “Living Stones doing business as GROW Living Stones.” But adding the word GROW has made our name cumbersome and, on occasion, confusing. Remember the article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that referred to us as Growing Living Stones? While it made sense to make the change in 2019 when God called us to grow His ministry, we believe it’s now time to delete a word that has become superfluous, is inherent in the work we do, and distracts from who we really are; living stones, called by Christ the Cornerstone, to feed and help the hungry and hurting. This change won’t happen all at once. It will take time to delete the word GROW from the many places it appears. It may even take a while for some of us to stop referring to ourselves as GLS, but it will ultimately be much easier to simply say, write, and understand Living Stones rather than GROW Living Stones! Most importantly, it will still be the same group of amazing volunteers serving as Christ’s hands and feet to the glory of God!

We’re Connecting!
At 7:00 a.m. on August 5, our Community Health Worker, Carrie Weber, and Charley Hannagan, who leads our minglers group, climbed into the St. Clair Health van with two of our neighbors and headed to the annual Mission of Mercy Free Dental Clinic at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. They, along with three other neighbors who had their own transportation, found their way easily through the well-organized process that took them from registration to screenings to teeth cleaning, fillings, and even an extraction. By 2:00 they were on their way home, all having received dental care, a lunch provided by Living Stones, and much-welcomed camaraderie. Carrie noted that for the first time this year, the clinic also offered hearing and vision testing along with free hearing aids and glasses for those who needed them. With more advanced notice next year and the continued support of our partner St. Clair Health, we hope to help many more of our neighbors take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

We’re Helping!
Thanks to St. Clair Health, Living Stones neighbors were able to receive free flu shots at all three of our Sunday meals in September, with more to be given in October, plus on an as-needed basis throughout the flu season. St. Clair donated all the supplies necessary to prepare for and administer the shots, plus staff nurses from the hospital to give them, which they did along with two of our volunteers who are also nurses. Thus far, 31 shots have been given to grateful neighbors. According to Carrie, our Community Health Worker, who made all the arrangements with St. Clair Health and notified our neighbors of the opportunity, “Many of those who received shots said how much they appreciated not having to make a special trip to the doctor’s office. It was so easy to just get their shots while at the dinner.” This is just one of the ways GROW Living Stones and St. Clair Health are working together to help keep our neighbors healthy.

GROW Living Stones fosters the cultivation of relationships with neighbors who join us for meals at Living Stones tables. As relationships develop and deepen, GROW Living Stones volunteers come alongside those individuals and families to assist them in navigating the challenges in their lives and encourage them to find hope in Christ as they learn to trust Him.
"Won't you be my neighbor?"
