March 2022
Maryland/DC American Choral Director's Association
Dear ACDA Member!

The first quarter of 2022 is almost over and you made it! With the pandemic and other factors affecting what we do every day, you are still RESONATING.

Some of us attended ACDA East where we were refreshed, inspired, and our passion for choral music was revived. We left equipped, and this conference gave us the push we needed to continue on and RESONATE our commitment to inspire excellence and nurture lifelong involvement in choral music for everyone through education, performance, composition, and advocacy.

We have some great events coming up and we hope that you will attend!
  • ACDA Collegiate Choral Conference - Saturday, April 9, 2022
  • Voices United 2022 - Friday, August 5-6, 2022

As put forth by the 2022 ACDA Eastern Region Board and Conference Committee, may you seek to create sound waves that travel further in different directions, fostering diversity and inclusivity in ways that RESONATE with more people.

Sincerely,

Maryland/DC ACDA Executive Board

Featured Local ACDA Member Choral Composers
We will be featuring three members of the Maryland/DC ACDA Chapter who compose choral music on each of our upcoming newsletters. For the first edition, we are pleased to feature the following three local choral composers.
Alysia Lee
Alysia Lee is the inaugural President of the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund, the bold hyperlocal grantmaker stewarding public funds to support the success of Baltimore’s young people. Lee is a Kennedy Center Citizen Artist and the Founder and Artistic Director of Sister Cities Girlchoir (SCG), the El Sistema-inspired, girl empowerment choral academy in Philadelphia, Camden, and Baltimore in its tenth season. This year Alysia debuts as series editor of Hal Leonard’s Exigence for Young Voices, the new choral series uplifting Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian composers for young choir ensembles. Lee is also a proud Chorus America board member.

Dr. Diana V. Sáez
Dr. Diana V. Sáez is the Director of Choral Activities at Towson University. A leading specialist in Latin American music, Dr. Sáez is a frequent guest conductor, adjudicator, and lecturer in the United States and abroad. In the past five years, she has presented at national and regional ACDA conventions, American universities, and various other engagements in North and South America. Prior to that, she served for 25 years as artistic director of Cantigas, the award-winning chamber choir of Latin American and Spanish music. Her compositions are published by Hal Leonard, Boosey and Hawkes, and the Roger Dean Publishing Company.

Michael Jothen
Michael Jothen, Emeritus Professor of Music, Towson University, has published varied choral works presenting unison, multi-part, sacred, secular, accompanied, a cappella, and original or folk texts and musical characteristics. His experiences teaching public school vocal ensembles and guiding various ages of church choirs have and remain a strong influence on his compositional process. Works published by Beckenhorst Press, Broadman Press, Choristers Guild, Coronet Press, Hal Leonard, Heritage Press, Laurel Press, Sing, Walton Music and World Library have resulted in awards from ASCAP for his contributions to the choral repertoire.
